ANGELS NOTEBOOK: ERSTAD DUE BACK MONDAY.

Byline: Joe Haakenson

Manager Terry Collins all but guaranteed first baseman Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. Prior to 2007, he had played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise (1996-2006).  will start Monday's game against the Texas Rangers Texas Rangers, mounted fighting force organized (1835) during the Texas Revolution. During the republic they became established as the guardians of the Texas frontier, particularly against Native Americans. .

Erstad has just three at-bats since he strained his left hamstring Sept. 2 in Cleveland. Going into Saturday's game, the Angels were 4-9 since he was injured.

``There's a real good chance he's going to play Monday,'' Collins said. ``Because I'm running out of time. If I wait too long, I might not have him anyway. We're running low of opportunities to get him in a game.''

A-Rod sees 40-40: The Mariners' Alex Rodriguez Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez (born July 27, 1975 in New York, New York), commonly nicknamed A-Rod, is a Dominican American baseball infielder. He is the starting third baseman for the New York Yankees, after having played shortstop for the Texas Rangers and Seattle  became the third player in major-league history to hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases in a season when he homered off Jack McDowell
Jack Burns McDowell (born January 16, 1966 in Van Nuys, California) is a former Major League Baseball player. A right-handed pitcher, McDowell won the American League Cy Young Award in 1993. He was nicknamed "Black Jack".
     in the first inning Saturday.

Rodriguez, who hugged Ken Griffey Ken Griffey may refer to:
    • Ken Griffey, Sr. (born 1950), a retired Major League Baseball player, and the father of Ken Griffey, Jr.
    • Ken Griffey, Jr. (born 1969), a current Major League Baseball player for the Cincinnati Reds
after crossing the plate, joined Jose Canseco (42 homers, 40 steals in 1988) and Barry Bonds Barry Lamar Bonds (born July 24 1964 in Riverside, California) is a left fielder for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball. He is the son of former major league All-Star Bobby Bonds, the godson of Hall of Famer Willie Mays, and a distant cousin of Hall of Famer Reggie  (42 homers and 40 steals in 1996) in the 40-40 club. Rodriguez has 40 homers and 43 steals.

    Reshuffling rotation: Chuck Finley
Charles Edward Finley (Born:November 26 1962 in Monroe, Louisiana) is a former left-handed starting pitcher in Major League Baseball. He played for the California Angels (later the Anaheim Angels) from 1986 to 1999 and the Cleveland Indians and St.
and Steve Sparks For other uses, see Steve Sparks (disambiguation).

Steven William (Steve) Sparks (born July 2, 1965 in Tulsa, Oklahoma) is a knuckleball-throwing right-handed former Major League Baseball pitcher, who graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1987.
will flip-flop in the rotation, Finley being moved back to start Tuesday's game against the Rangers on five days rest and knuckleballer Sparks being moved up to start Monday on three days rest.

Sparks made only 53 pitches in his last start Thursday at Texas; Finley made 126 pitches in his start Wednesday.

``Obviously, Steve didn't throw many pitches, and Chuck threw a lot of pitches,'' Collins said. ``(Sparks) can come back on short rest, maybe that will help him.''

Wednesday's starter for the third game of the Texas series is up in the air, though Collins said Ken Hill is tentatively slated to get the call.

Hill lasted only 3-2/3 innings in Friday's loss to Seattle and still has discomfort in his surgically repaired right elbow. Collins' candidates to replace Hill if needed are plenty - Jeff Juden Jeffrey Daniel Juden (born January 19, 1971 in Salem, Massachusetts) is a former Major League Baseball player. He is 6'8" tall and weighs 265 lbs., and he batted and threw with his right hand , Jason Dickson, Allen Watson and Jarrod Washburn.

But Dickson seems to be the leading candidate should Hill be unable to go. Dickson retired all 11 batters he faced on Friday in relief of Hill and has looked good since being called up from Triple-A Vancouver on Sept. 1.

Kreuter's back: With Phil Nevin suffering from a sprained left ankle, the Angels acquired catcher Chad Kreuter from the White Sox for cash considerations. He joined the club Saturday and will back up Matt Walbeck.

``Chad's a guy we know can catch and throw,'' Collins said of Kreuter, who played for the Angels last season before being included in a deal for Tony Phillips. ``He did a good job for us last year and he's having a good year this year.''

Very superstitious: In an effort to change the team's fortunes, Saturday's starting lineup was posted in the clubhouse upside down.

      ANGELS vs SEATTLE

Time: 5:05 p.m., at Edison Field.

TV/Radio: No TV; KRLA 1110-AM, XPRS 1090-AM (Spanish).

Matchups: The Angels' Omar Olivares (8-8, 3.91 ERA) will face the Mariners' Paul Abbott (2-0, 5.06 ERA). Olivares earned this start after replacing the injured Ken Hill last Monday and helping the Angels get their only victory on the road trip. Olivares gave up two runs (one earned) and six hits in six innings.
