ANGELS NOTEBOOK: EDMONDS TO SLOW UP ON HIS RECUPERATION.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

The Angels sent a message to center fielder Jim Edmonds James Patrick "Jim" Edmonds (born June 27, 1970 in Fullerton, California) is a left-handed batter who plays for the St. Louis Cardinals. Edmonds is affectionately known as Jimmy Baseball [1], "Lassie" and as "Hollywood"[2] among Cardinals fans.  Sunday: Slow down.

Edmonds has been so eager to return to the field that he has pushed his surgically repaired right shoulder too far, and the club has decided to ease off on his rehab work.

Edmonds was informed of the plan in a meeting with manager Terry Collins, general manager Bill Bavasi William J. Bavasi (born December 27, 1957, Pasadena, California) is the current general manager and vice president of baseball operations for the Seattle Mariners. The son of longtime Major League Baseball executive Buzzie Bavasi and the brother of Peter Bavasi, also a former MLB , hitting coach Rod Carew
Rodney Cline "Rod" Carew (born October 1, 1945), is a former Major League Baseball player for the Minnesota Twins and California Angels from 1967 to 1985.

He was born to a Panamanian mother on a train in the town of Gatun, which at that time was in the Panama Canal
, trainer Ned Berger and team medical director Dr. Lewis Yocum on Sunday afternoon.

The gist of the meeting was that such a surgery requires four months of recovery time. Given that the surgery was April 22, don't expect Edmonds back until mid-August.

``Jim is making progress and we're happy with his progress,'' Yocum said. ``But we're going to slow him down with his swinging. Our date of four months hasn't really changed. It's predicated on the biology of the surgery. It takes that time for the tissue to heal. Rushing that can damage the labrum labrum /la·brum/ (la´brum) pl. la´bra   [L.] an edge, rim, or lip.

For now, there will be no batting practice, only hitting soft toss with Carew.

``He progressed well from hitting off a tee to soft toss,'' Yocum said. ``Then he started hitting off Terry, and Terry throws heat. Jim got sore, a little too sore. It's not safe to take live BP until he builds more strength.''

Yocum said his biggest concern is Edmonds' ``enthusiasm to get back.''

``But just the sight of Edmonds taking batting practice had people in the organization - not just Edmonds - a little too giddy,'' he said.

``They got excited, I got excited and it was like, `Wait a second.' There's not pain in the problem area. It's just sore in the muscles around it, which is good.''
