ANGELS NOTEBOOK: DEPTH TRUMP CARD IN ANGELS' FINAL 21.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

BALTIMORE - The Angels have 21 games to play in the regular season that will determine their fate. Last season, they lost 19 of their final 21 games, which meant little because they were out of the race anyway. This season, the final 21 mean everything.

Manager Mike Scioscia
Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.
said he believes the club won't have a repeat of last year's collapse because of its depth.

``Right now I feel good about the guys' health, stamina, and the depth we have this year is the best we've had in my three years here,'' Scioscia said. ``We'll keep going out the next 21 days, and if a guy needs to recharge, we have the guys who can fill in and do a good job.''

Most of the Angels' core group of players have played nearly every game. Left fielder Garret Anderson Garret Joseph Anderson (born June 30, 1972 in Los Angeles, California) is a Major League Baseball left fielder who has played his entire career for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  has missed one game, third baseman third baseman

Previously, Glaus played with the Anaheim Angels (1998-2004) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (2005).  has missed five, shortstop David Eckstein David Mark Eckstein, (born January 20, 1975 in Sanford, Florida), is a Major League Baseball shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals. He is noted for his size, as he is a small (for professional sports) 5' 7", but weighs 175 pounds.  and first baseman Scott Spiezio Scott Edward Spiezio (born September 21, 1972 in Joliet, Illinois) is a Major League Baseball player with the St. Louis Cardinals. He is the son of former Cardinal Ed Spiezio.  eight each and center fielder Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. Prior to 2007, he had played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise (1996-2006).  10.

``These guys haven't had a lot of time off, but the need hasn't been there to give them a lot of time off,'' Scioscia said. ``You have to balance giving guys time off with keeping offensive continuity. We couldn't do a lot of things last year because we didn't have the depth. But the depth of the club this year and been a strength and will continue to be a strength down the stretch.''

--Moving up Wash day: Jarrod Washburn Jarrod Michael Washburn (born August 13, 1974 in La Crosse, Wisconsin) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. Drafted by the California Angels in the 2nd round of the 1995 amateur draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Washburn won the final game , the club's opening-day starter and leader in victories with 16, will start today's game against Baltimore. Depending on what happens, the Angels will consider bringing him back for his next start on three days' rest.

If they do that, Washburn's final four starts of the season will come against Oakland (twice) and Seattle (twice).

Scioscia, though, said he won't take Washburn out early from today's game to keep him fresh.

``We're not going to jeopardize a game to set something set up for later,'' Scioscia said.

The Angels have only one off-day left: Monday, Sept. 23.

--Making progress: Pitcher Aaron Sele Aaron Helmer Sele (born June 25, 1970 in Golden Valley, Minnesota) is an MLB right-handed pitcher who plays for the New York Mets.

His family moved to Poulsbo, Washington, a Scandinavian town on the Kitsap Peninsula, where Aaron pitched for North Kitsap High School.
, out with a partially torn muscle in his right (pitching) shoulder, played long toss Saturday. He also made some throws in the infield as part of a drill and said he felt better.

Sele hasn't pitched since Aug. 20, but Scioscia said the club hopes Sele can begin throwing off the mound when the team returns to Anaheim on Monday.
