ANGELS NOTEBOOK: BULLPEN CONCERNS STILL NAG AT SCIOSCIA.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

CHICAGO - Manager Mike Scioscia
Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.
     and pitching coach Bud Black
For the baseball player from the 1950s, see Bud Black (baseball 1950s).
Harry Ralston "Bud" Black (born June 30 1957 in San Mateo, California) is a former left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball, and the current manager of the San Diego Padres.
of the Angels continue to try to figure out how to use a seven-man bullpen. Getting all of them enough work to stay sharp and defining their roles has not been easy.

One pitcher - Derrick Turnbow Thomas Derrick Turnbow (born January 25 1978 in Union City, Tennessee, USA) is a right-handed Major League Baseball pitcher who currently plays for the Milwaukee Brewers. Early career  - has not pitched in a game yet. Turnbow, 21, pitched in Single-A last season and was selected in December's Rule V Draft from the Philadelphia Phillies “Phillies” redirects here. For other uses, see Phillies (disambiguation).

    .

Under normal circumstances, he'd be pitching at Double-A this year, but by rule, the Angels have to keep him on the 25-man roster or offer him back to the Phillies.

Turnbow warmed up Friday night when starter Ken Hill was struggling early, but he never got in the game.

``We're breaking him in slowly, he'll get in there,'' Scioscia said. ``But we're not waiting for a game to get out of hand to get Derrick in. We think Derrick's a functional pitcher on the staff, not just someone you use in blowouts.''

As far as getting everyone enough work to avoid becoming rusty, Scioscia says it's a work in progress.

``I think we're doing a good job of trying to slot 'em into roles,'' he said. ``As we go on, it is much easier to get roles defined. Of all the things that have happened to the club, the one area we're coming up short is bullpen production.

``Other than (Troy) Percival, all of them seem to be having a rough time at once. But I'm confident they'll come together as a group.''

Including Saturday's 3-1 victory, the starters are 6-3 with a 3.24 ERA; the bullpen is 0-2 with a 6.61 ERA.

    --Salmon slump: Tim Salmon
Timothy James "Tim" Salmon (born August 24, 1968 in Long Beach, California) is a former Major League Baseball right fielder/designated hitter who played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise.
went 1 for 1 with three walks but is still hitting only .219. The three walks were a sign he might be coming out of his early-season slump because he's being more selective.
