ANGELS NOTEBOOK: BROTHERS KEPT BUSY.

Byline: Ben Villa Staff Writer

TEMPE, Ariz - If Angels manager Mike Scioscia wanted to talk to either Jeff or Jered Weaver on Sunday afternoon, it wouldn't have been difficult to find them.

Both were probably in the training room together icing down their arms.

The brothers each started in a Cactus League split-squad game with mixed results.

Jeff Weaver was supposed to start on Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers, but because the game was rained out, his start was pushed back one day.

Throwing nothing but fastballs and changeups, the elder Weaver allowed three runs and four hits in three innings of work against the Oakland A's, including giving up home runs to Eric Chavez and John Baker.

On the other hand, Jeff's younger brother, Jered Weaver made the two- hour bus ride to Tucson and had his best outing of his Angels career against the Chicago White Sox.

The former Long Beach State star pitched four scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out two and walking two.

--Flashing some leather: The Angels gave up three runs in the first three innings Sunday to the A's but it could have been much worse if not for the defensive plays made by Chone Chone (chō`nā), town (1990 pop. 41,437), W Ecuador. Cacao, ivory nuts, and panama hats are shipped through Chone. Figgins and Darin Erstad.

In the second inning, Figgins, who has struggled in the early part of spring training at third base, made a diving stop and threw out Keith Ginter at first base.

One inning later, he made a diving catch on a line drive by Jason Kendall with a runner on first base. Two batters later, with runners on second and third and one out, Erstad ran full speed in center field and made a spectacular sprawling catch on a ball hit by Bobby Crosby that possibly prevented a big inning.

--Injury report: Garret Anderson didn't play in either game Sunday because of a sore left heel, but Scioscia said he's making progress. Robb Quinlan, battling Salmon for one of the final roster spots, fouled a ball off his left shin Friday but resumed action Sunday. Quinlan went 1 for 3 with a RBI in the game at Tucson. Salmon went 0 for 4 against the A's.
