Mo Vaughn
Maurice Samuel 'Mo' Vaughn (born December 15, 1967 in Norwalk, Connecticut), nicknamed "Hit Dog", (a nickname given to him by his Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers at Seton Hall University) was a Major League Baseball first baseman from 1991 to 2003.
will be paid the hefty sum by the Angels during the course of a six-year deal he signed last November, a move that surprised many, considering the Angels' reluctance to pay big money to free agents in the recent past.

Eisner said it was simply a case of deciding to ``play by the rules,'' which means spending that kind of money in today's market.

``For us, we have no alternative but to be competitive,'' he said. ``I don't think our fans would accept us if we weren't competitive. If you're going to be on the field, you've got to be competitive on the field.''

Eisner said he found Vaughn to be ``a nice guy and a lot stronger than he expected,'' and added he didn't find it necessary to meet Vaughn in person before making such a significant financial investment.

``Well, they asked me, they called me,'' Eisner said of team president Tony Tavares and general manager Bill Bavasi William J. Bavasi (born December 27, 1957, Pasadena, California) is the current general manager and vice president of baseball operations for the Seattle Mariners. The son of longtime Major League Baseball executive Buzzie Bavasi and the brother of Peter Bavasi, also a former MLB . ``I have faith in them. I asked thousands of questions.''

Eisner also said that signing Vaughn was not an isolated event. It's all part of the organization's long-range plans.

``Signing Mo Vaughn was not an accident,'' he said. ``We sat down some time last summer and talked about the strategy of the Angels and what we wanted to do.

``We could do one of (a number of) things. We could cut back and not be competitive. We could stay in the middle, where we wouldn't be competitive but wouldn't embarrass ourselves. Or we could have a really competitive team and really put people in the seats. We decided to go for it.

Not so good: Vaughn was one of few bright spots for the Angels on Friday. Starter Steve Sparks For other uses, see Steve Sparks (disambiguation).
