The Angels have signed pitcher Erik Hanson
Erik Brian Hanson (born May 18, 1965 in Kinnelon, New Jersey) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays from 1988 to 1998.

The Toronto Blue Jays are a professional baseball team based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Blue Jays are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball's American League.
, and assigned him to triple-A Vancouver.

Hanson, 33, had shoulder surgery last year and began this season on the disabled list. He was 0-3 with a 6.24 ERA in 11 games this season for the Blue Jays before being released June 16.

``He's a quality veteran guy, and if he gets his arm in shape we'll have a guy we might be able to go to, Angels manager Terry Collins said. ``He can give you those quality innings and he possesses pretty good stuff. It's a matter of making sure his arm's in shape.

``He needed a place to get squared away, Angels general manager Bill Bavasi William J. Bavasi (born December 27, 1957, Pasadena, California) is the current general manager and vice president of baseball operations for the Seattle Mariners. The son of longtime Major League Baseball executive Buzzie Bavasi and the brother of Peter Bavasi, also a former MLB  said. ``He feels he's down 4 to 5 mph on his fastball. He wants to go down and pitch for a month.''

Decision time: Catcher Todd Greene Todd Anthony Greene (born May 8, 1971 in Augusta, Georgia) is a catcher in Major League Baseball who is currently a free agent. He previously played for the Anaheim Angels (1996-2000), Toronto Blue Jays (2000), New York Yankees (2001), Texas Rangers 2002-2003) and the Colorado  had his right shoulder examined by Dr. James Andrews James Andrews can refer to:

in Birmingham, Ala. Thursday, and now will have to decide whether or not to have season-ending surgery.

Greene consulted Drs. Lewis Yocum and Frank Jobe before seeing Andrews. If he decides against surgery, he could come back this season to DH and play first base.

``I'm not putting the screws to him to do something,'' Bavasi said, ``but I'd like for him to get a gameplan in motion.

In pain: Tim Salmon was unavailable for the third consecutive game Thursday after receiving a cortisone cortisone (kôr`tĭsōn'), steroid hormone whose main physiological effect is on carbohydrate metabolism. It is synthesized from cholesterol in the outer layer, or cortex, of the adrenal gland under the stimulation of adrenocorticotropic  shot Monday night in his left foot. Recovery time from a cortisone shot typically takes 48 to 72 hours.

Salmon, limited to DH duty the rest of the season because of a partially torn ligament in the foot, said the most difficult part of the injury is mental.

``I'm really just getting tired of dealing with it, he said.
