ANGELS NOTEBOOK: ANGELS MIGHT NEED MORE PITCHING HELP.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - The Angels have boasted of their pitching depth all season, but the events of the past 10 days might eventually lead them to claim another starter off waivers to fill out the rotation.

As of now, the Angels have a three-man rotation of Ramon Ortiz, Scott Schoeneweis Scott David Schoeneweis [SHOW-en-WEISS] (born October 2, 1973, in Long Branch, New Jersey) is an American left-handed relief pitcher in Major League Baseball. Cooper was sent back to Triple-A Edmonton on Monday to work out mechanical flaws in his delivery.

There is a possibility Cooper won't be ready by then, leaving the Angels with the option to start a reliever - either Mike Fyhrie Michael Edwin Fyhrie (born December 9, 1969, in Long Beach, California) is a retired professional baseball player who played 5 seasons for the New York Mets, Anaheim Angels, Chicago Cubs, and Oakland Athletics of Major League Baseball.  or Al Levine.

``The options we have here are viable,'' manager Mike Scioscia said. ``But our guys always have their ear to the pavement.''

``My own feeling is we're going to do it with somebody we've got,'' general manager Bill Stoneman said. ``We're not really ready to determine that right now. . . . Anything's possible. There could be a surprise, that's part of the business. Things happen. Opportunities spring up, you jump at it.''

Stoneman said he isn't second-guessing himself for releasing Ken Hill or trading Kent Bottenfield. Even though Bottenfield has been gone since July 30, he still leads the team in starts (21) and innings pitched (127 2/3).

``We ran into a couple fluky fluk·y also fluk·ey

things,'' Stoneman said. ``Etherton goes out, Washburn goes out. We'll get through this. We ran into this early in the year and got through it. Most importantly, we're delighted to have Ronny Gant (obtained in the trade for Bottenfield). He won a game for us with two home runs the other night. He's going to be a huge part of the offense the rest of the year.''

--Short hops: Pitcher Tim Belcher threw lightly off a mound and played long toss Wednesday. Belcher, who is recovering from a strained muscle in his right elbow, is not close to returning. . . . Shortstop Kevin Stocker has been bothered by a sore hamstring the past few games. . . . The Angels are off today, then begin a three-game series against the defending champion Yankees on Friday.
