SEATTLE -- Known for not making trades at the deadline, now comes speculation that the Angels might have been toyed around with by the Texas Rangers Texas Rangers, mounted fighting force organized (1835) during the Texas Revolution. During the republic they became established as the guardians of the Texas frontier, particularly against Native Americans. .

Indications are that the Rangers were asking more from the Angels for first baseman Mark Teixeira than they ultimately received from their eventual trade partner, the Atlanta Braves The Atlanta Braves are a professional baseball team based in Atlanta, Georgia. The Braves are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball's National League. From to the present, the Braves have played in Turner Field. . While the Rangers ended up getting rookie catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia Jarrod Scott Saltalamacchia (born May 2, 1985 in West Palm Beach, Florida) is a catcher and first baseman for the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball team. Due in part to the length of his surname, which at 14 letters is the longest in Major League history, he is often referred to  and three first-rate minor leaguers, the Angels were being pressed for players with major-league experience like Brandon Wood Richard Brandon Wood (born March 2, 1985 in Austin, Texas) is an Major League Baseball third baseman for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He bats and throws right-handed. , Howie Kendrick Howard Joseph (Howie) Kendrick (born July 12, 1983 in Jacksonville, Florida) is an American Major League Baseball second baseman for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He bats and throws right-handed. Kendrick Attended West Nassau High School where he played baseball. , Joe Saunders Joseph Francis "Joe" Saunders (born June 16, 1981 in Falls Church, Virginia) is a Major League Baseball left-handed starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

 and Ervin Santana.

It could be chalked up to the high price of trying to deal with a team in your own division, since the Angels and Rangers are both in the AL West. But one scenario floated around Tuesday that the Rangers had no intention of making a deal with the Angels and simply kept them on the line to help drive up the price from the Braves.

"Those are things that are possible but really not within our control, so you don't worry about it," Angels general manager Bill Stoneman said. "If you have an objective, if you think there's a player out there or two or more that might help you, you go for it. If you don't get them, you don't get them. At least you do your best to try to get it done if you can."

It ended up being another trade deadline in which the Angels failed to improve themselves either with a blockbuster acquisition like Teixeira, a bench player to add depth or even a piece for the bullpen.

"We did what we could and that's all you can do is take your best shot and hope it works," Stoneman said when asked if he was satisfied with everything he was able to do during as the deadline approached. "If it doesn't work, at least you know you took your best shot.

"Don't get stupid, don't do something that you really think might weaken you because the accolades are pretty short-term when you end up weakening a club. That's not what we're in here for. We're in here to win ballgames and not get applause for doing something that might be popular."

Players now must clear waivers for a trade to be made and those deals have to be done by Sept. 1 in order for a new player to be added to a team's playoff roster.

Moseley to start Friday: Angels manager Mike Scioscia announced that Dustin Moseley will get another start Friday at Oakland. The right-hander assumed Bartolo Colon's spot in the rotation Sunday against the Detroit Tigers and lasted just 42/3 innings despite being handed a 12-1 lead after three innings.

Moseley's assignment guarantees that Ervin Santana will make his third start at Triple-A Salt Lake tonight.

Because Moseley still is not stretched out to pitch as long as the other four Angels starters, Scioscia will keep a 12-man pitching staff for the time being.

Aybar to Salt Lake: Erick Aybar will leave today for a rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake. Aybar has been on the disabled list since suffering a hand contusion CONTUSION, med. jurisp.
