ANGELS NOTEBOOK: ACHING EDMONDS STILL STARTING.

Byline: Marc J. Spears Daily News Staff Writer

The Angels are debating whether Jim Edmonds needs to be placed the 15-day disabled list or not.

On Wednesday, the Angels had hot-hitting catcher Todd Greene in the clubhouse ready to give the center fielder with ailing knees a much-needed rest. But after a Wednesday MRI on Edmonds' right knee was inconclusive, he was penciled in as the designated hitter during batting practice.

``I got one thing on my mind, trying to get healthy,'' said Edmonds, who is also playing with torn cartilage in his left knee and struggled running the bases Wednesday. ``I don't know how I'm going to do it or approach the situation.''

Angels manager Terry Collins said that Greene's situation is in ``limbo,'' but he will be kept around the next of couple days in case the club decides to make the move. On Monday, Greene set a Triple-A Vancouver franchise record for homers in a season by hitting No. 25 (in just 63 games). The 26-year-old, who recently asked to be traded so he could play in the majors, also batted .357 with 75 RBI and 51 runs for the Canadiens.

``I can't make their decisions on when I can come back,'' Greene said. ``Obviously, I thought I was ready and I stayed ready. Instead of being disappointed and frustrated, I'm just trying to stay ready for when the time comes.''

Watson case postponed: Today's starter Allen Watson said that his possible court date, due to a April 18 incident on a Harrah's Riverboat Casino in Liberty, Mo., will likely be postponed until after the season in September. The left-hander was charged for allegedly hitting Willie Purse, 26, in the face.

Watson, 26, says the charges might be dropped, but he will probably either fight it in court or settle. Purse was charged with misdemeanor peace disturbance for allegedly bothering Watson and teammate Chuck Finley. Clay County prosecutor Michael E. Reardon has sided with Watson by saying that Pulse used ``offensive and indecent language which is likely to produce an immediate violent response from a reasonable recipient.''
