ANGELS NOTEBOOK: A'S, ANGELS NOT DONE YET.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

The Angels and Oakland A's haven't really had much of a rivalry, other than the fact they play in the same division. That might change soon.

Neither team was happy with the other after Thursday's game, in which seven batters were hit by pitches. A's batters were hit five times; Angels batters were hit twice.

Angels starter Scott Schoeneweis Scott David Schoeneweis [SHOW-en-WEISS] (born October 2, 1973, in Long Branch, New Jersey) is an American left-handed relief pitcher in Major League Baseball. He plays for the New York Mets.  did most of the damage, tying a major- league record by hitting four batters. Frank Menechino Frank Menechino (born January 7, 1971 in Staten Island, New York) is a baseball utility player, most recently with the Toronto Blue Jays of the American League. He played college baseball at Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Florida before transferring to the University  was hit twice, both times on the foot. Jason Giambi Jason Gilbert Giambi (born January 8, 1971) is a Major League Baseball player who is the 1st baseman and designated hitter for the New York Yankees.

He was the American League MVP in 2000 with the Oakland Athletics, and is a 5-time All-Star who has led the American League in
and Olmedo Saenz also got hit by Schoeneweis.

``We were getting buried out there,'' Saenz said. ``He (messed) up a whole lot of times. Five times? C'mon, that's not a major-league pitcher. He hit Frankie in the same place twice. What the (heck) is that?''

Schoeneweis, though, struggled in the first three innings, when three of the batters were hit.

``I wasn't trying to hit anybody,'' Schoeneweis said. ``If I was I wouldn't have hit 'em in the foot. I've got to pitch inside. I'm only upset because I put my teammates in jeopardy. I'm not apologizing for it, but they need to know I'm not trying to hit 'em.''

The A's apparently did not get the message. It appeared all but one of the seven pitches that hit batters were ones that simply got away. But with two out and nobody on base in the eighth, A's pitcher Mark Guthrie
Mark Andrew Guthrie (born September 22, 1965 in Buffalo, New York) is a former Major League Baseball relief pitcher. He was a member of the 1991 World Series Champion Minnesota Twins.
hit Scott Spiezio Scott Edward Spiezio (born September 21, 1972 in Joliet, Illinois) is a Major League Baseball player with the St. Louis Cardinals. He is the son of former Cardinal Ed Spiezio.  on the left elbow with a pitch, and Angels manager Mike Scioscia

``Can you believe that?,'' A's outfielder Terrence Long Terrence Deon Long (born February 29, 1976 in Montgomery, Alabama) is an outfielder who last played for the New York Yankees. Long bats and throws left-handed. He has a career batting average of .269.  said. ``They hit five of our guys and he's yelling at us. I hope this thing isn't over. It better not be. What they did wasn't right.''

Scioscia wouldn't directly accuse the A's of hitting Spiezio, but it was clear he wasn't happy.

``I hope they didn't throw at Spiezio because I don't think there's any place in the game for that,'' he said. ``If you saw Scott's (lack of) command it was obvious he wasn't trying to hit anybody. Hitting Menechino two times in the foot? Is that something they think was by design? Do you think Mike Holtz Michael James (Mike) Holtz (born October 10, 1972 in Arlington, Virginia was a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for the California Angels (1996), Anaheim Angels (1997-2001), Oakland Athletics (2002[start]), San Diego Padres (2002[end  wanted to put the tying run on base and bring up Long with a chance to win the ballgame? It doesn't make sense to me. We're not that type of club.''

The Angels and A's will meet again for a four-game series in Oakland July 2-5.
