ANGELS LOSE IN THE 10TH ROYALS RALLY TO WIN ON VAUGHN MISPLAY KANSAS CITY 6, ANGELS 5.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

KANSAS CITY Kansas City, two adjacent cities of the same name, one (1990 pop. 149,767), seat of Wyandotte co., NE Kansas (inc. 1859), the other (1990 pop. 435,146), Clay, Jackson, and Platte counties, NW Mo. (inc. 1850).  - It's not often a left fielder and a first baseman converge on a pop fly ball in foul territory, but that's what happened Saturday night in the game between the Angels and Kansas City Royals The Kansas City Royals are a professional baseball team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Royals are a member of the Central Division of Major League Baseball's American League. From to the present, the Royals have played in Kauffman Stadium. .

It also happened to be the final play of the game, as the Royals' Carlos Beltran tagged from third and scored when Angels first baseman Mo Vaughn
Maurice Samuel 'Mo' Vaughn (born December 15, 1967 in Norwalk, Connecticut), nicknamed "Hit Dog", (a nickname given to him by his Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers at Seton Hall University) was a Major League Baseball first baseman from 1991 to 2003.

Vaughn hesitated before throwing home, allowing Beltran to score without a play.

``I didn't want to wheel and make a bad throw if he wasn't going,'' Vaughn explained. ``I was going toward the stands and because of the angle I couldn't get in good position to throw.

``Everyone in America knew the play was at home. But the only reason I didn't come up firing was I couldn't see the catcher clearly and didn't want to overthrow it. It happens like that sometimes, like you're in no-man's land No-Man's land Hand surgery A fanciful term for the fibrous sheath of the flexor tendons of the hand, specifically in the zone from the distal palmar crease to the proximal interphalangeal joint. See Rule of threes. .''

Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. Prior to 2007, he had played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise (1996-2006).  was brought in from left field to be a fifth infielder when the Royals loaded the bases with nobody out. He played on the shortstop's side of second base when Jorge Fabregas grounded into a force play at the plate.

That should have been a double play, but pitcher Eric Weaver's throw home was high, forcing catcher Bengie Molina Benjamin José ("Bengie" or "Ben") Molina (born July 20 1974 in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico) is the starting catcher for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball. After being initially regarded as a "good glove, no hit" catcher, Molina has developed into one of the better  to make a leaping catch and giving him time only to record the out at home.

Erstad moved to the second baseman's side of second when Randa hit the popup. Erstad sprinted toward the stands and was in a position to make a play and might have had a better angle for a throw home. But Vaughn beat him to it, and it was the difference.

``I was thinking if Mo Vaughn caught the ball I would go home,'' Beltran said. ``If Erstad caught the ball I was staying, because he might be more aware of what's going on What's Going On is a record by American soul singer Marvin Gaye. Released on May 21, 1971 (see 1971 in music), What's Going On reflected the beginning of a new trend in soul music. . I think I surprised Vaughn. He caught the ball and was ofalance.''

Erstad said he never saw Vaughn until he made the catch, so he didn't think about calling Vaughn off.

``I haven't played second base too often,'' Erstad said. ``I'll put that one in the bank . . . You see a different play every day, don't you? Holy cow Holy cow or sacred cow may refer to:
    • Holy cow, an exclamation of surprise
    • An idiom used to identify a person, institution, idea, or ideology as being unreasonably immune to criticism or opposition
    • Sacred Cow

The Angels could have avoided the wild 10th inning had closer Troy Percival Troy Eugene Percival (born August 9, 1969 in Fontana, California) is a Major League Baseball reliever on the St. Louis Cardinals. Percival came out of retirement on June 8, 2007 when he signed a minor league deal with the Cardinals[1].  been able to save the 5-3 lead they took into the bottom of the ninth. Scott Pose Scott Vernon Pose (born February 11, 1967, in Davenport, Iowa) was a Major League Baseball outfielder. He is an alumnus of the University of Arkansas.

Drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 34th round of the 1989 MLB amateur draft, Pose would make his Major League Baseball
led off the inning with a single to left and Dave McCarty followed with a pinch-hit, two-run homer to tie the game at 5-5.

``That was the best I've felt all year,'' said Percival, who leads the league with 14 saves but has two blown saves in the past four games. ``I missed on the pitch (to McCarty) pretty bad. I was trying to go down and away and went right down the middle.''

The Royals have won in their final at-bat 12 times this season, matching last season's total. But Angels manager Mike Scioscia
Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.
wouldn't blame the loss on the final play.

``We had some breakdowns,'' he said. ``The play to Weaver, he makes nine times out of 10. That's a double-play ball. When you don't execute that, you open the door for them.''

``It was routine,'' Weaver said. ``I could go out there and do it again nine more times and I hit (Molina) in the chest. I had all the time in the world and didn't make the throw. There are no excuses.''

Angels starter Kent Bottenfield gave up only three runs and four hits, but tired quickly and lasted only five innings.

Erstad's two-run homer (his eighth) in the second gave the Angels a 2-0 lead. The Royals took a 3-2 lead in the third, but the Angels scored three times in the eighth inning, the final two runs scoring on Molina's two-out single for a 5-3 lead. Molina had three of the Angels' nine hits.

``We left some runners on base early in the game,'' Scioscia said. ``It came back to haunt us. It's a shame we couldn't finish this one off.''
