ANGELS LEG IT OUT, TAKE SERIES UNLIKELY TRIPLE THREAT KEYS RALLY; SCHOENEWEIS GROUNDS TIGERS ANGELS 4, DETROIT 2.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

DETROIT - Angels manager Mike Scioscia
Michael Lorri "Mike" Scioscia (born November 27 1958 in Morton, Pennsylvania) is a former catcher and current Major League Baseball manager. His last name is pronounced SO-shuh. He is often referred to by the nickname Sosh.
couldn't believe it when informed that Jorge Fabregas' triple Thursday afternoon was his second of the season.

``My gosh,'' Scioscia said, ``Is Halley's comet Halley's comet or Comet Halley (hăl`ē, hā`lē), periodic comet named for Edmond Halley, who observed it in 1682 and identified it as the one observed in 1531 and 1607.  coming back?''

A triple by the slow-footed backup catcher might have been rare, but it was the difference in the Angels' 4-2 win over the Detroit Tigers The Detroit Tigers are a professional baseball team based in Detroit, Michigan. Schoeneweis (10-8) gave up two runs and five hits while making an economical 91 pitches in eight innings to get the victory, and Percival pitched the ninth inning for his 34th save in 36 chances this season.

Fabregas' big hit came early. With two out and two on in the second inning, he launched a pitch from Tigers starter Jeff Weaver (10-12) to the right-center-field gap. Both Garret Anderson and Adam Kennedy scored easily, but Fabregas appeared to be an easy out after he rounded second and headed for third.

But second baseman Damien Easley's relay from shallow center hit Fabregas in the back, allowing him to reach third safely.

``I was down-shifting in order to block the ball,'' Fabregas said. ``I knew I was going to be out, so I was reading the third baseman. It was a soggy track; horses don't run well on it and neither do I.''

The start of the game was delayed an hour and 27 minutes because of rain and delayed again in the bottom of the third for 27 minutes. But it didn't affect Schoeneweis.

Orlando Palmeiro had driven Fabregas home with a double in the second to put the Angels ahead 3-0. The Tigers made it 3-1 in the fourth on Tony Clark's RBI RBI

Kennedy made an error on Wendell Magee's grounder to second to begin the inning, and shortstop David Eckstein couldn't handle Schoeneweis' throw on a potential double-play grounder by Shane Halter for another error, giving the Tigers runners on first and second with nobody out.

But Schoeneweis remained poised and got a big out when he threw out Magee at third on Juan Encarnacion's sacrifice bunt attempt.

``My thinking is I'm going to third all the way unless I'm told different,'' Schoeneweis said. ``That's what you have to do to kill a rally.''

Schoeneweis then got out of the inning when he fielded Javier Cardona's sharp grounder and began a 1-6-3 double play.

Schoeneweis threw primarily sinkerballs, and 17 of his 24 outs came on infield grounders.

``We didn't throw many sliders sliders

, we flat out threw sinkers all day long,'' Fabregas said. ``They helped us out by swinging early (in the count). He said, 'Hey, this is what I've got.' It's a big ballpark, so we'll take our chances.''
