As an exasperated Angels general manager Bill Bavasi William J. The son of longtime Major League Baseball executive Buzzie Bavasi and the brother of Peter Bavasi, also a former MLB  explained to reporters why he was unable to make a deal for pitching help Friday night in the press dining room, the crack of the bat could be heard in the background.

It was the sound of Nomar Garciaparra's three-run home run, turning a 2-1 Boston Red Sox The Boston Red Sox are a professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. Bavasi was spared the details of the bullpen's collapse, but it certainly didn't appease him after a fruitless day on the phones.

``When we got (Jim) Abbott (in 1995) we felt good about it, and when we got (Ken) Hill (in '97) we felt good about it,'' Bavasi said. ``Tonight, I don't feel so good.

``As a GM, you know there's a feeling in the clubhouse to get something done. I know by not doing anything tonight I've created a void, or disappointment to the ballclub. I hope is short-lived, that in 24 hours they'll be over it.''

Bavasi said he worked right to the deadline of 9 p.m. PDT PDT

``We thought we had a deal only five minutes before we came over here,'' Bavasi said. ``We were going to send a package that we said no way we would give up going in. And the other club said no. They said it was too late to make such a big deal.''

Bavasi said the club was not hindered by payroll, and that the offers he made were more generous than when talks were initiated.

``In the morning we were stalled, so we took every club that had an interest in our players and made one more offer,'' he said. ``We went over the line. We drew our own line in the sand and went over it.

Saberhagen and Olivares engaged in a pitchers' duel not much different than one night earlier when Chuck Finley and the Yankees' Andy Pettitte battled through seven scoreless innings.

The Angels had only one hit through five innings, but it resulted in a run. Troy Glaus, making his major league debut, doubled to right field to drive in Cecil Fielder from third and give the Angels a 1-0 lead.

The Angels faced Martinez one other time this season, the Angels winning in 11 innings on April 6. Martinez got a no-decision. Watson has rejoined the starting rotation after a stint in the bullpen. Watson complained about his role as a reliever, and now manager Terry Collins has given Watson the chance to put up or shut up.
