ANGELS GET BEST OF RED SOX MATTHEWS JR. GOES 3 FOR 5 WITH HOMER ANGELS 10, BOSTON 4.

Byline: BEN VILLA

Staff Writer

ANAHEIM -- On a night when Barry Bonds Barry Lamar Bonds (born July 24 1964 in Riverside, California) is a left fielder for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball. He is the son of former major league All-Star Bobby Bonds, the godson of Hall of Famer Willie Mays, and a distant cousin of Hall of Famer Reggie  established himself as the most prolific home run hitter in major-league history, the Angels were working to establish themselves as the best team of 2007.

For the second straight game, the Angels defeated the Boston Red Sox The Boston Red Sox are a professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Red Sox are a member and currently champions of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. From to the present, the Red Sox have played in Fenway Park.  and as a result, moved one step closer toward having the best record in baseball after they won 10-4 Tuesday night in front of 44,177 at Angel Stadium.

The victory was the Angels' third in a row and it helped them maintain a four-game lead over the Seattle Mariners The Seattle Mariners are a professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. The Mariners are a member of the Western Division of Major League Baseball's American League. From to the present, the Mariners have played in Safeco Field.  in the American League West The American League West is one of three divisions in Major League Baseball's American League. The division currently has four teams, but it has had as many as seven teams before the 1994 realignment. .

More importantly though, as Bonds was celebrating an individual accomplishment after he hit his 756th career home run in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  to move past Hank Aaron on baseball's all-time home run list, the Angels were showing everybody that they could be a team to be reckoned with come the fall.

"It's funny because when I was a free agent in the winter, my final two choices were San Francisco or Anaheim," said Gary Matthews

Jr., who went 3 for 5 with a home run. "Literally, it came down to the last hour and looking at Bonds make history and breaking records, I was thinking I could have been there.

"But honestly, I couldn't be happier than where I am now. I know I made the right choice and this team is proving me right. We're in first place and we have an opportunity to go to the playoffs, which I have never played in before. I think we're a really good team and we're playing awfully well."

The Angels were dominated in early April by the Red Sox, losing three straight games by a combined score of 25-3, but through the first two games of this series, things are clearly different.

Angels starter Joe Saunders Joseph Francis "Joe" Saunders (born June 16, 1981 in Falls Church, Virginia) is a Major League Baseball left-handed starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Saunders played college baseball at Virginia Tech, where he compiled a 27-7 career record.
struggled some but he still pitched long enough and effectively enough to win his sixth game of the season without a loss. The left-hander went 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits.

"The Red Sox are a good hitting team and they had some good swings against me tonight," Saunders said. "But I'll take a win every time I can get one, and a pitcher can't ask for anything more than what the team gave me tonight."

And while Saunders wasn't quite on top of his game, the Angels' offense was.

The Angels pounded out 14 hits and, aside from Matthews, who finished with four RBI RBI

He bats and throws right handed.  and Maicer Izturis each had two hits and two RBIs.

The Angels are now 66-46 while the Red Sox, who still have the best record in baseball, are 68-45.

The two teams will conclude the series tonight before playing each other four times again next week in Boston.

After falling behind 4-2 in the fifth inning Tuesday night, the Angels scored eight unanswered runs: five in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth -- on Matthews' 14th homer.
