And a golden opportunity to get a leg up in the race toward the postseason came and went as the Angels gave away a late lead and suffered a disappointing 6-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners The Seattle Mariners are a professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. Angels starter Jarrod Washburn Jarrod Michael Washburn (born August 13, 1974 in La Crosse, Wisconsin) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. Drafted by the California Angels in the 2nd round of the 1995 amateur draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Washburn won the final game  pitched a gem for seven innings and left the game with a one-run lead. Angels relievers Brendan Donnelly Brendan Kevin Donnelly (b. July 4, 1971 in Washington, D.C.) is a Major League Baseball relief pitcher with the Boston Red Sox.

, Scot Shields and newly acquired Jason Christiansen combined to give up five runs.

``We couldn't get a couple hits with some guys in scoring position to get a little breathing room,'' Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ``It's tough when you get late in the game and every pitch going to be magnified because you're playing tight games.''

Washburn scattered just three hits and one run in his seven innings of work. After allowing a first-inning run, Washburn did not allow a Mariners baserunner past second base. The left-hander, who spent a stint on the disabled list last month with inflammation in his pitching elbow, retired 10 consecutive Mariners batters before being lifted entering the eighth inning after throwing a total of 95 pitches.

``I'm not going to second-guess (Scioscia),'' Washburn said about the decision to pull him from the game. ``It was the right decision at the time ... (Donnelly) and Shields will get that job done most of the time.''

But not this time. In the eighth, Donnelly gave up a leadoff, line-drive double to right-center field by pinch- hitter Jeremy Reed and a bunt single to Ichiro Suzuki. One out later, Mariners designated hitter Raul Ibanez singled to right on a 3-0 pitch to score Reed from third and tie the score at 2.

Shields (8-10) replaced Donnelly and escaped the eighth-inning jam. But he created his own jam in the ninth by walking Mike Morse and Reed. Suzuki, the Mariners' All-Star right fielder, predictably made the Angels pay by lacing a one-out single to left to score Morse for a 3-2 lead.

Then Christiansen, who came over in a trade with the San Francisco Giants The San Francisco Giants are a Major League Baseball team based in San Francisco, California that currently play in the National League West Division. New York Giants history

The Angels rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth on Vladimir Guerrero's two-out RBI double off Seattle closer Eddie Guardado. But Darin Erstad, the potential tying run, grounded softly to second base to end the game.

Angels hitters went 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position.

Seattle reliever J.J. Putz (5-5) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.

Washburn has allowed three or fewer runs in eight consecutive and 15 of his past 16 starts.

The Mariners needed just two batters to score their first run. Suzuki led off the game with a triple off Washburn and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jamal Strong.

The Angels scratched across a run to tie the game in the bottom of the first. Orlando Cabrera hit a one-out single and scored when Erstad's single dropped just over the glove of Sexson, Seattle's 6-foot-8 first baseman.

In the third, Chone Figgins led off with a bunt single and eventually scored on Guerrero's fielder's choice grounder to give the Angels a 2-1 lead.
