The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on -- everything is going to be magnified,'' manager Mike Scioscia said. ``For us, the situational hitting, which always has been important for us, is essential now. It's been a little soft, and our execution as far as getting bunts down needs to be cleaned up.'' Aside from Guerrero's continued success against the Rangers, the only positive was aggressive base running. Figgins scored from first base on a single by Garret Anderson in the first inning, and Juan Rivera went from first to third on a single to center to set up a scoring opportunity that ultimately was wasted. ``I think that part of it is alive and well, but in the batter's box, whether it's the approach of (situational hitting) or it's the ability to get bunts down, we've been very soft,'' Scioscia said. ``It's one thing that we've put a lot of emphasis on. It's something that you don't notice until it's not there, and right now it's not.'' Escobar deserved a better fate. The Rangers cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth inning on Hank Blalock's groundball double into left-center that probably would have been scooped up by Cabrera had the Angels not been employing a shift that had their shortstop on the right-field side of second base. The Rangers tied it 2-2 on Brad Wilkerson's home run to right-center to open the bottom of the ninth. Wilkerson delivered his eighth home run of the season on a 2-2 split-finger pitch that Escobar said he was trying to throw in the dirt. After Mark DeRosa followed with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, Scioscia went to Shields. Gary Matthews Jr. was retired on a roller out in front of the plate for the second out, but Michael Young followed with a groundball through the hole at short that went past sliding third baseman Dallas McPherson and a sliding Cabrera. Escobar said he had enough energy to continue but the decision wasn't up to him. ``I'm sure that when he goes out there he already has made a decision,'' Escobar said of Scioscia's trip to the mound in the seventh inning. ``I didn't want to come out of the game because I wanted a chance to win. But he's the boss. He made the decision and there's nothing I can do. ``But if you ask me, do I want to come out of the game? No. I want to be out there and see if I can get out of there and have a chance to win the game. I felt good. I didn't feel tired at that point.'' The Angels will leave it up to John Lackey to help end their second six- game losing streak of the season. ``It's a long season, and we still have confidence that we can get back on track,'' Escobar said. doug.padilla@sgvn.com (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2731 CAPTION(S): 2 photos, box Photo: (1) Vladimir Guerrero extends his hitting streak against the Rangers to 40 games with an RBI double.
