As final spring-training warmups go, Elmer Dessens Elmer Dessens Jusaino [deh-SENZ] (born January 13, 1971 in Hermosillo, Mexico) is a pitcher on the Colorado Rockies. He bats and throws right handed. He is 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds. His 2007 salary is $1.7 million. His pitching speed can reach 90-93 mph.  couldn't have had much worse of an afternoon.

Dessens, who is scheduled to be the Dodgers' fifth starter to begin the season, retired only one of seven batters he faced in the seventh inning Sunday as the Angels rallied for four runs to beat the Dodgers 6-4 in front of 34,085 at Dodger Stadium     [  and sweep the three-game Freeway Series The term Freeway Series refers to a series of baseball games played between Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of the American League and the Los Angeles Dodgers of the National League. .

The Dodgers completed their exhibition schedule with a 13-15-4 record and will open the regular season with a three-game series at San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  beginning Tuesday.

on the mend, the Dodgers have little choice but to turn to Dessens, who went 1-5 with a 7.40 ERA in 10 starts last season. Dessens entered Sunday's game with a 1.54 spring ERA in five relief outings, but he didn't fare so well out of the bullpen against the Angels.

The Dodgers led 2-1 when Dessens relieved effective starter Scott Erickson to start the seventh. He retired Robb Quinlan on a fly ball, but Jose Molina and Maicer Izturis followed with singles and pinch-hitter Curtis Pride crushed a home run into the right-field pavilion to give the Angels a 4-2 lead.

Dessens couldn't finish the inning, as David Matranga reached on a bunt, moved to second on Jeff DaVanon's single and scored on Lou Merloni's single, which chased Dessens from the game.

``I'm not worried,'' Dessens said. ``The point was just to go out and pitch an inning and get ready for Friday, to have me face hitters one more time. Obviously, it wasn't good, but I feel OK.''

The Dodgers can take some solace from the effort of Erickson, who will start the season's fifth game.

Erickson ran into only sporadic trouble Sunday in six solid innings, as he allowed one run on five hits, walked one and struck out three. Erickson made eight starts in spring training and finished with a 2.00 ERA, having allowed eight earned runs in 36 innings with seven walks and 18 strikeouts.

``We saw this kind of effort all spring,'' Tracy said. ``He asked for an opportunity to do some things out there, and he held up his end of the bargain.''

The Dodgers hope Erickson can be the 2005 version of Jose Lima, a non-roster surprise, and he looked the part against the Angels. Erickson stranded runners on third base in the second and sixth innings, and was only hurt by one hit, Izturis' fifth-inning triple, which scored Quinlan from first.
