He made his professional debut on May 20, 1990 and had a promising rookie year finishing with a 3.  (12-7) for five consecutive singles in the second to build a 4-0 lead. The right-hander was charged with six runs on eight hits in five-plus innings.

    Troy O'Leary singled home Reggie Jefferson with Boston's first run. Valentin and Mike Greenwell hit RBI singles, and another run scored on a double-play grounder.

    Salmon's RBI single capped a two-run third that began with a walk to Randy Velarde and a double by Jim Edmonds.

    Boston added two runs in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead. O'Leary and Valentin both doubled, finishing Boskie, and reliever Jason Grimsley's wild pitch allowed a run to score.

    A sacrifice fly by Jorge Fabregas scored Rex Hudler, who reached base on an error by Boston right fielder Luis Rodriguez in the seventh.

    Greenwell's solo homer, his fifth, gave Boston a 7-3 lead in the eighth. The line drive into the right-field bullpen came off right-hander Greg Gohr.

    J.T. Snow hit his 15th home run in the Angels ninth.

    Notes: The Angels reinstated pitcher Chuck McElroy from the 15-day disabled list and designated left-hander Kyle Abbott for assignment. McElroy went on the DL on Aug. 21, retroactive to Aug. 11 because of an inflamed left thumb. McElroy pitched a hitless inning. . . . Gordon won his fourth straight start at Anaheim Stadium.
