ANGELS BAIL OUT KARL NEW LEFTY GOES OUT BEFORE COMEBACK.

Byline: Gordon Verrell Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - The best thing about Scott Karl's performance Tuesday night in his first start for the Angels: He kept the ball in the ballpark.

That may not be saying a lot, but it was critical, as it turned out.

He didn't dig that big of a hole, and the Angels, once they got their big bats cranking, were able to overcome Karl's shortcomings A shortcoming is a character flaw.

``The guy is incredible,'' said Angels manager Mike Scioscia, who once more mounted the soapbox in support of Erstad as the AL Most Valuable Player.

``What he brings to this club . . . he plays every game one way, the right way, whether it's a spring training game or the seventh game of the World Series.''

The World Series, of course, is something the Angels only talk about - they haven't been there - but it was with that in mind that they sought to add to their pitching with the acquisition of Karl, a 28-year-old left- hander who had struggled mightily at Colorado (1-3, 7.40 ERA).

``It was everything . . . nervousness, rustiness, excited . . . they hit good pitches, they hit bad pitches,'' Karl said, assessing his 2 2/3 innings in which he was clubbed for four runs on nine hits.

Once Karl departed, the bullpen took charge. Lou Pote bailed Karl out of a jam in the third, Mike Holtz got Pote out of a mess in the sixth, then Al Levine, Shigetoshi Hasegawa and Troy Percival combined to retire the final nine Blue Jays in order.
