ANGELS ARE FEELING THE SHORT SHRIFT : SAN FRANCISCO 6, ANGELS 3.

Byline: Joe Haakenson San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. It lies to the east of the city of Los Angeles, to the north of the Puente Hills, to the south of the San Gabriel Mountains, and to the west of the Inland Empire.  Tribune

It's something the Angels say they have become used to, but not necessarily something they are happy about.

Before their 6-3, 10-inning loss to the San Francisco Giants The San Francisco Giants are a Major League Baseball team based in San Francisco, California that currently play in the National League West Division. New York Giants history
Early days and the John McGraw era
on Wednesday night in front of 24,299 at Edison Field, the Angels learned which of their players would be participating in Tuesday's All-Star Game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games .

To them, however, what was noteworthy wasn't so much who was named to the American League American League (AL)

One of the two associations of professional baseball teams in the U.S. and Canada designated as major leagues; the other is the National League (NL).
team - first baseman/outfielder Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. Prior to 2007, he had played his entire career with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise (1996-2006).  and pitcher Troy Percival Troy Eugene Percival (born August 9, 1969 in Fontana, California) is a Major League Baseball reliever on the St. Louis Cardinals. Percival came out of retirement on June 8, 2007 when he signed a minor league deal with the Cardinals[1].  - but who was left off the team.

Shortstop Gary DiSarcina
Gary Thomas DiSarcina (born November 19, 1967 in Malden, Massachusetts) is a Minor league baseball manager and a former shortstop in Major League Baseball. He was raised in Billerica, Massachusetts and attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
, center fielder Jim Edmonds and pitcher Chuck Finley have been All-Stars in the past, but not this year. What makes it wrong, the Angels say, is that the club's performance so far this season is being ignored.

To add injury to insult, Tim Salmon - already hampered by a partially torn ligament in his left foot - was hit on the inside part of his left knee by a line drive hit by teammate Justin Baughman. Salmon, who was on third base but standing in foul territory, was diagnosed with a contusion CONTUSION, med. jurisp. He had the knee drained after being replaced by a pinch runner.

The two other division leaders in the American League - the Yankees and Indians - have five players each going to the All-Star Game. The Angels, the AL West leaders, have just the two.

``Without a question,'' Erstad said after being asked if more Angels deserved to go. ``Ridiculous.''

Erstad and Percival spoke to the media during a news conference Wednesday afternoon and appeared embarrassed that they were going without any other teammates.

``The whole team deserves to go,'' said Percival, 1-2 with a 2.80 ERA and a major league-leading 25 saves. ``Whether a guy's hitting .240, we've got guys that grind it out every day. I think our going is representative of everybody.

``Guys we have are grunts,'' he said. ``We don't have flashy guys like Derek Jeter and Omar Vizquel. We don't have a lot of pretty players. I think that's a testament to our team. We're in first place and we don't have six guys on the All-Star team.''

It wasn't pretty the way the Angels lost Wednesday, either. They scored two runs in the eighth inning to tie the game at 2-2, only to lose it after Bill Mueller hit a three-run homer off losing pitcher Greg Cadaret (1-2) in the top of the 10th.

Etherton deal: The Angels and first-round draft pick Seth Etherton agreed Wednesday to terms on a 1998 contract. Etherton, taken with the No. 18 overall pick, is believed to be getting a signing bonus of $1 million.

Etherton, a 21-year-old right-handed pitcher, went 13-3 with a 3.23 ERA in his senior year for national champion USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  this past season. He was a consensus All-American first-teamer and The Sporting News Player of the Year.
