``They got some runs for me and I got confidence,'' Watson said. ``I got ahead of hitters, I didn't walk anybody, I tried to keep the ball down, and it worked out.''

Damon Mashore drove in three runs and Jim Edmonds James Patrick "Jim" Edmonds (born June 27, 1970 in Fullerton, California) is a left-handed batter who plays for the St. Louis Cardinals.      (3-2) in the first inning and drove in another run when he grounded out with the bases loaded in the third against Dan Carlson.

Erstad, who has hit safely in 18 of 20 games, had a two-run double off Carlson in the fifth. Paco Martin and Gary DiSarcina also drove in runs for the Angels with singles.

Watson (1-2) gave up a two-run homer to Fred McGriff in the first, then limited Tampa Bay to six hits the rest of the way. The left-hander walked one and struck out five in his first complete game since May 30, 1996, for San Francisco.

``The best thing about tonight is that he went out and he wanted to finish the game. I thought that was important for him,'' Angels manager Terry Collins said.

``Last year, he got us in the seventh inning a lot of nights, but some of the games he couldn't put them away. Tonight, I thought it was important for him to finish.''

Alvarez's bid to tie the record for most April wins by a pitcher on a first-year expansion team lasted one inning. In three victories since an opening-day loss to Detroit, the Tampa Bay left-hander had given up just two earned runs in 21 2-3 innings.

The Angels, however, pounced on him with three runs in the first inning. Dan Carlson replaced Alvarez after the Devil Rays' starter hit two batters and walked a third to load the bases with no outs in the second.

Carlson got out of the jam by striking out Dave Hollins and getting Cecil Fielder to ground into a double play, then gave up three runs in the third and two in the fifth as the Devil Rays fell behind 8-2.

Mashore hit his first homer of the season in the ninth to cap the scoring.
