But when he's been on, he's been right on the money. On Monday night at Angel Stadium, the Angels cashed in another sparkling performance from Santana.

This time the 22-year-old right-hander cooled off the visiting Oakland Athletics “Philadelphia Athletics” redirects here. For other uses, see Philadelphia Athletics (disambiguation).

, the hottest team in baseball, with seven strong innings as the Angels opened a three-game series against their AL West rivals with a 5-2 victory in front of 40,546.

In four of Santana's eight career starts entering Monday's game, he'd surrendered at least five earned runs and failed to get out of the fifth inning. In the four others, he'd allowed no more than one earned run.

Start No. 9 was of the excellent variety as Santana surrendered just four hits and two runs with six strikeouts through seven innings to earn his fourth win and help the Angels increase their lead in the West to eight games over the Texas Rangers Texas Rangers, mounted fighting force organized (1835) during the Texas Revolution. ``I try to do good things every day,'' Santana said. ``Sometimes it's good, sometimes not ... today all my pitches were good.''

Said Angels manager Mike Scioscia

Santana (4-4) pitched himself into trouble in the top of the sixth inning.

He issued a leadoff walk to Mark Kotsay Mark Steven Kotsay (born December 2, 1975) is an outfielder for the Oakland Athletics.

Oakland DH Scott Hatteberg took advantage of the opportunity by lacing a double to the right-field wall, allowing Kotsay and Chavez to score for a 2-1 lead.

The Angels came right back in the bottom of the sixth, batting around to turn a one-run deficit into a three-run lead.

Chone Figgins led off with a walk against Oakland starter Kirk Saarloos (5-6). Figgins stole second for the second time in the game, then advanced to third when Darin Erstad blistered a hard grounder off the glove of first baseman Dan Johnson for a single.

The Angels loaded the bases with one out on a single by Garret Anderson and an intentional walk to Steve Finley. After a pop-up to short by Bengie Molina, Jeff DaVanon and Orlando Cabrera delivered RBI singles to chase Saarloos.

DaVanon hit a high bouncer off home plate which Saarloos could not barehand, resulting in a single and a 3-2 Angels lead. Then Cabrera then roped a fastball into center field, plating two runs for a 5-2 advantage.

``Figgy's baserunning set the tone,'' said Scioscia. ``Ersty's situational hitting. Orlando's big hit. Those are the things you need from the whole lineup and we got it.''

Scot Shields and Francisco Rodriguez, who earned his 21st save in 23 save opportunities, each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
