The Angels who played nearly flawless baseball against the AL Central leaders Monday bore no resemblance to the Angels who had lost four in a row, five of six on the homestand and 20 of 29 since the end of June.

``He's a good player, he was all pumped up, his adrenaline was flowing,'' Angels manager Terry Collins said. ``We sat back the last few weeks and talked about the trade we didn't make. All of a sudden, he's a big addition. He gave us the lift we needed.''

The Angels had 10 hits, including a three-run home run by Tim Salmon

Angels starter Steve Sparks (5-2) gave up three runs and seven hits in 5-1/3 innings to get the win, with help from relievers Pep Harris and Trevor Wilson. Harris replaced Sparks with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth and got out of the inning by striking out Sandy Alomar and getting David Bell on a popup. Wilson pitched the final two innings to close it out in his Angels debut.

The Angels also got stellar play in the field. Right fielder Garret Anderson played a drive off the wall and threw out Manny Manny may refer to:

Shortstop Gary DiSarcina dived to his right to make a catch on a line drive by Bell in the third. And left fielder Orlando Palmeiro made a diving catch of a liner hit by Omar Vizquel in the third.

``We got a lot of things today,'' Collins said. ``Tonight was an example of what goes on when we play the game right. Good pitching, absolutely tremendous defense and big hits. During the streak we had in June, we played like that every night.''

There was cause for concern for the Angels, however, in this one. Darin Erstad grabbed his left hamstring after beating out an infield hit in the seventh inning. He had to leave the game, was diagnosed with a slight strain and is listed as day-to-day.
