BIGGEST WIN OF FIRST HALF April 24, at Safeco Field, Angels 10, Seattle 6 Angels had lost their first six games against the Mariners and were 6-14 overall when they finally beat Seattle, which started eight-game winning streak. WORST LOSS OF FIRST HALF April 21, at Network Associates Coliseum, Oakland 6, Angels 5 Troy Percival took ball with 5-3 lead in ninth but gave up three-run homer to ex-Angel Greg Myers. REPORT CARD STARTING PITCHING: B Healthy and mostly consistent all season. BULLPEN: C+ Not as good as last season, but team still has Troy Percival closing games. CATCHER: B Bengie Molina leads majors in throwing out would-be basestealers. FIRST BASE: C+ Scott Spiezio doesn't hit many homers (four) but has 39 RBI and has played outstanding defense. SECOND BASE: B- Adam Kennedy is batting .298 and has improved defensively. SHORTSTOP: B- David Eckstein is sparkplug spark·plug tr.v. spark·plugged, spark·plug·ging, spark·plugs Informal To inspire or energize (an endeavor, for example). as leadoff hitter and is surprising major-league leader in grand slams (three). DESIGNATED HITTER: C Brad Fullmer has not been hot extended period of time but is doing better (.269, 10 homers, 30 RBI) than anybody at DH last year. BENCH: B Even without injured Shawn Wooten, backups Benji Gil, Jose Nieves, Orlando Palmeiro and Jorge Fabregas have contributed. MANAGER: A- Mike Scioscia wouldn't let players panic despite terrible (6-14) start. FRONT OFFICE: B+ Acquiring pitchers Aaron Sele and Kevin Appier made Angels instant contenders. WHAT THEY NEED Another proven arm in the bullpen and another bat off the bench with pop. Shawn Wooten's return from the disabled list after the break could provide the latter. WHAT THEY HAVE TO TRADE Schoeneweis (unless he becomes the reliever they need), IF Jose Nieves or IF Benji Gil (who play the same positions) and a growing surplus of quality minor-leaguers. UPCOMING SERIES TO WATCH vs. Seattle, July 19-21. Angels haven't played Mariners since April, when they lost six of seven to them.
