over the weekend, the Angels headed home comfortably atop the AL West with a lead of 41/2 games. After the Mariners won the series opener Monday, the Angels responded by winning the final two games, including and 8-6 victory Wednesday that upped their division lead to 51/2 games.

Vladimir Guerrero Vladimir Alvino Guerrero (born February 9, 1976 in Don Gregorio, Nizao, Dominican Republic), and known in his native Dominican Republic as Miquéas (Spanish for Micah), is a Major League Baseball right fielder who plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  came through with the big blow against Mariners starter Felix Hernandez. With the Angels trailing 5-4 in the fifth inning, Guerrero crushed a Hernandez offering to right-center for a three-run home run to give them the lead for good.

Guerrero had been in a power drought by his standards. He had not hit a home run since May 17 when the Angels were at Seattle. His 11th home run of the season also was the 349th of his career.

Guerrero has had his way with Mariners pitching this season. He is batting .552 (16 for 29) against Seattle with four home runs and 11 RBIs.

There might not be anybody on the Mariners to match Guerrero's strength, but Seattle has proven it can deliver as a group. The Mariners entered the game ranking second in the American League American League (AL)

Even after scoring just one run on Tuesday, the Mariners have averaged 8.1 runs over their last seven games.

The Mariners' problem has been pitching, as they entered with a 4.65 ERA, 11th in the American League. Hernandez had been the Mariners' steadiest arm, but the Angels got to the right-hander for seven runs and nine hits over six innings. The run total matched what Hernandez had allowed in five of his previous six starts combined.

The Angels looked to be in control early by doing what they do best: scoring first-inning runs. The Angels got a mammoth three-run home run from Gary Matthews

The four runs helped to erase an early 1-0 deficit and meant the Angels now have outscored their opponent 59-22 in the opening inning.

After giving up the first-inning run, Jered Weaver looked shaky in the second when he gave up back-to-back singles to open the inning. But the Mariners did not score. After a perfect third inning, the Mariners again went in attack mode.

Ben Broussard walked to open the fourth, followed by a single from Kenji Johjima. A one-out walk to Yuneski Betancourt loaded the bases. Jose Lopez and Ichiro Suzuki each drove in a run with singles as the Mariners cut the lead to 4-3.

The lead was gone in the fifth inning when the Mariners scored two more runs to go up 5-4. Adrian Beltre had an RBI RBI
