ANAHEIM -- The Angels dusted off their big bats, and for one of the few times this season the offense came to the rescue of a pitcher.

"It's good because there are those times when we don't do well offensively and (the pitchers) pick us up," Guerrero said through an interpreter. "God willing, we can continue to give them a lot of support. We have a very good pitching staff, and we hope all of us can contribute."

typically pulls his share of the load, but he failed to get into a groove against the Mariners. He gave up five runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings, with three walks and three strikeouts.

"He really wasn't getting through his pitches like he usually does, and I think it affected his command a little bit," manager Mike Scioscia

said. "He was behind in some counts, he walked some guys and he just wasn't crisp."

Just like the offense, the Angels' bullpen also rode to the rescue. Dustin Moseley Dustin Aaron Moseley (born December 26, 1981 in Texarkana, Arkansas) is a pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Minor League Career

(4-0), who is a candidate to take Bartolo Colon's spot in the rotation Saturday, gave up a run over 2 1/3 innings, while Scot Shields pitched a perfect eighth inning.

Francisco Rodriguez gave up a leadoff walk in the ninth inning but struck out Raul Ibanez, Jose Guillen and Ben Broussard to end it and earn his American League-leading 18th save.

The Angels are now a season-best 12 games over .500 at 33-21, and their 19-7 record at home is their best 26-game start in franchise history.

But as smooth as things have been going for the Angels of late, the series against the Mariners showed that Seattle might be in this chase for the long haul. The Mariners, who now trail in the AL West by 51/2 games, entered as the second-best hitting team in the AL.

"Those guys have a deep lineup, even with some of their guys not swinging like they can," Scioscia said. "You have to pitch well. They're going to score runs and, if they stay together, they will be a fine offensive unit. We're going to have to play well."

Guerrero came through with the biggest blow against Mariners starter Felix Hernandez. With the Angels trailing 5-4 in the fifth inning, Guerrero crushed a Hernandez offering to right-center for his three-run homer.

Guerrero had been in a power drought by his standards. He had not hit a home run since May 17, when the Angels were at Seattle.

"I haven't been frustrated because it's part of the game," said Guerrero, whose 11th home run of the season also was the 349th of his career. "I've been swinging it for a long time. I don't get frustrated because I trust the people that are hitting behind me. The home runs happen when they happen. I don't worry about when they come but I'm very happy this one came tonight."
