ANGELENOS RACING TO GET OUT OF TOWN LAX BUSY FOR MAJOR TRAVEL WEEKEND.

Byline: Michael Gougis Staff Writer

With remarkably good spirits, Southern Californians hit the airports and highways Saturday, heading off to enjoy the company of family and friends over the holidays.

``I'm going to get out of crazy L.A. for a while,'' said Joanne Sullivan, 45, of Hollywood, as she stood in line outside the newly renamed Bob Hope Airport Bob Hope Airport (IATA: BUR, ICAO: KBUR, FAA LID: BUR) is a regional and national airport located in Burbank, California, United States.

That is a 4.7 percent hike over last year and the largest annual increase since the terrorist strikes of Sept. 11, 2001.

meant that lines at LAX stretched out along the sidewalks, and travelers measured their progress sometimes in feet per hour.

Among the crowds, the most often overheard question was, ``Is this the end of the line?''

Inside and out, security announcements interrupted the soothing sounds of holiday carols playing over the intercom. But the calming music did little for those whose flight times were approaching rapidly.

``I dropped off my mom here last week, and it was nothing like this,'' said Monica Barron, 24, of Pico Rivera Pico Rivera (pē`kō rĭvĕr`ə), city (1990 pop. 59,177), Los Angeles co., SW Calif., SE of Los Angeles on the San Gabriel and Rio Hondo rivers; inc. 1958 with the union of Pico and Rivera into one community. , who was flying from LAX for the first time.

While he said the experience this year was ``worse - longer lines'' than last year, he was still calm - there was plenty of time before his flight left, and he had a book to read.

``If you expect it, it's not a problem. And we live in Los Angeles, so we expect it,'' said Siri Khalsa, 34, who was the last person in line at Terminal One - a line that reached the end of the block and snaked back on itself.

Over at Bob Hope Airport, officials expected only about 16,000 to 17,000 travelers on Saturday - roughly a tenth of the traffic at LAX. So it probably wasn't surprising to find people less stressed than they were at LAX, even Charlotte Lee, who was the last person in line on the sidewalk in front of the main terminal.

Even her vacation reflected her laid-back attitude.

``This is the first time I'm spending Christmas in Kentucky. I usually do the big holiday thing here. I'm going to let them do it this year,'' she said, smiling broadly.

During the rest of the year, local business travelers make up much of the airport's traffic, and with businesses slowing for the holidays, traffic there was much lighter.

``Most of my regular business travelers have already told me, 'See you next year,' said valet parking coordinator Antonio Solano, 27, of Hollywood.

``A lot of them are going on vacation, they're flying a lot farther than their normal business trips, and they're in line over at LAX,'' he said.
