ANGEL NOTEBOOK: ANGELS TO FACE PHENOM.

Byline: BEN VILLA Staff Writer

ANAHEIM -- The Angels will face the Mariners' best pitching prospect when Felix Hernandez starts against them this afternoon for the first time in his career.

Hernandez, from Venezuela, made his major-league debut Aug. 4, and even though the Angels and the Mariners have played each other numerous times since then, the Angels will take their first hacks against the hard-throwing 20-year-old, who ranks fifth in the American League American League (AL)

``He's a good pitcher, but we've faced a lot of good pitchers lately and beat them,'' Angels hitting coach Mickey Hatcher Michael Vaughn Hatcher (born March 15, 1955 in Cleveland, Ohio) is a former Major League Baseball player and a current coach. Most notably, he was Kirk Gibson's replacement for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1988 World Series, batting .368 (7/19) with two home runs and five RBI.  said. ``But we know he's going to be tough and we know he has a great arm.''

Last season, Hernandez turned heads with a fastball in the upper-90 mph range and a great mix of curveballs and changeups. He went 4-4 with a 2.67 ERA and held opponents to a .203 batting average batting average

. But this season, Hernandez started off slowly, going 0-3 in his firstfour starts before turning things around.

Hernandez has won his last two starts and four out of his last six to raise his record to 5-6. And even though his 5.32ERA is high, he still is striking out batters at an impressive rate. He is averaging 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings, which is third in the American League.

Good news: Bartolo Colon, who has been sidelined for most of the season with inflammation in his right shoulder, took another step toward rejoining the Angels when he threw a successful bullpen session.

Colon will make another rehab start Monday for Triple-A Salt Lake before possibly returning to the Angels' rotation sometime next weekend against San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850.
