ANDREW SHARKEY NAMED PRESIDENT OF AMERICAN IRON AND STEEL INSTITUTE

WASHINGTON, April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Andrew G. Sharkey has been named president of the American Iron & Steel Institute. His appointment will take effect Aug. 1.
Sharkey previously was president of the Steel Service Center Institute, a national trade association representing the interests of 400 steel service center companies. He will be succeeding Milton Deaner, who is retiring after six years as AISI president.
AISI is the principal trade association of the primary steel industry. In representing interests of steel companies and their suppliers, AISI is active in manufacturing, technology and market development, environment and energy policy, employee relations and occupational health and safety matters, and international trade and economics. The institute was founded in 1908.
"We are very pleased that the presidency of AISI is passing to someone with a proven record of effective industry leadership," said Joseph F. Toot Jr., chairman of AISI and CEO and president of The Timken Company. "Andy Sharkey's performance in leading the SSCI long has been widely admired."
Sharkey joined the SSCI in 1978 as director of education. He was named executive vice president in 1979 and president in 1981.
Sharkey earned a bachelor of arts in political science from Yale and a master of arts from Duquesne.
"The members of the AISI, as well as our supplier partners, are grateful to Milt Deaner for his strong leadership and dedicated service," said Toot.
Before becoming AISI president in January 1987, Deaner had a 38-year career in the steel industry. Immediately before joining AISI, Deaner had been chairman and president of McLouth Steel Corporation and its successor, McLouth Steel Products Corporation, for six years.
Deaner is a World War II Army Air Corps veteran and a graduate of Tri-State College, where he earned a mechanical engineering degree.
