Anderson dominated from the start to win in 4 minutes, 18.5 seconds. Defending Foothill League cross-country champion Nick Zoetewey of Saugus was second in 4:23.0 and Tom Kubler of Viewpoint, the 1999 state Division V cross-country champion, was third in 4:23.5.

Anderson came back an hour later to finish second in the 3,200 to Kubler (9:37.4) in a personal-best 9:39.6.

In the past three seasons, Anderson has dramatically dropped his 1,600 mark toward the end of the season after being stuck between 4:18 and 4:19.

As a junior, Anderson dropped from 4:26.9 to 4:19.25 at the Arcadia Invitational. He also had similar drops his freshman and sophomore seasons.

This season Anderson, who will attend MIT MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology , ran 4:18.23 to win the Pasadena Games in March and 4:19.41 at the Arcadia Invitational two weeks ago.

In the 3,200, Stein set a meet record to beat Flores, 11:10.9 to 11:14.2. Stein came back later in the meet to win a personal-best 5:13.0. Flores, returning to competition after a three-week layoff because of a hip strain, was second in 5:22.6.

``Knowing she's not in top shape made me more competitive trying to beat her,'' Stein said. ``I don't really think it means anything. It is not really fair because she has been injured in·jure

In one of the most competitive events, Herr, a senior, held off Daniel Clements of Taft, 1:56.0 to 1:56.7, with Taft's Anthony Hartzog in third in 1:59.8.

Felix timed 57.6 for her third school record of the season. The freshman has also broken school records in the 100 and 200.

In the boys' 1,600, Anderson was clear of the field after the first quarter passed in 63.0 and was at 2:06.0 at the halfway point. Anderson, however, who had been hoping to run at least 4:16, fell off the pace with 66 splits on his final two laps.

``I knew I was going to have to push it if I was going to get a fast time,'' Anderson said. ``I lost track of time and I would have probably pushed it harder at the end if I knew where I was.''
