ANDATACO First to be Certified by Quantum for Ultra/160 SCSI Hard Drives.

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 7, 1999--ANDATACO (Nasdaq: ANDA ANDA
abbr.
abbreviated new drug application
), a global leader in RAID and RAID-ready SCSI SCSI
in full Small Computer System Interface

Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB.
storage solutions, announced today it is the first storage enclosure manufacturer to be certified by Quantum Corporation to begin integrating Quantum's new Ultra/160 SCSI-based hard disk drives (Atlas(TM) 10K and Atlas(TM) IV) into its high-end Open Systems storage enclosures.

After several months of testing Ultra/160 SCSI on a variety of Intel-based platforms, ANDATACO is the first vendor to offer Ultra/160 storage solutions to the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  market for immediate availability with the company's new GigaSTOR/160(R) enclosures.

This announcement underscores ANDATACO's firm commitment to be first-to-market with this next generation of high-end storage technology. This is also the culmination of collaborative engineering agreements ANDATACO has had with Quantum and Adaptec dating back to last year, when the three companies demonstrated the industry's first Ultra/160 SCSI solutions at Fall Comdex.

"The GigaSTOR/160's unparalleled performance and manageability provide an ideal solution for both high-end workstations and servers running bandwidth intensive applications," said Mark Fife, vice president of marketing at ANDATACO. "We are very excited to be first-to-market with products that incorporate some of the most significant storage technology advancements in years."

"With ANDATACO, Quantum Atlas hard drives meet IS demands for non-stop intelligent data management," said Pat McGarrah, technology program director at Quantum. "This close-working relationship between ANDATACO and Quantum has played a big role in making this technology available to open systems markets."

Three core features; double-edge clocking, cyclical redundancy checking See CRC.  (CRC (Cyclical Redundancy Checking) An error checking technique used to ensure the accuracy of transmitting digital data. The transmitted messages are divided into predetermined lengths which, used as dividends, are divided by a fixed divisor. ) and domain validation Domain Validation is part of the SCSI standard. It describes how to negotiate the best possible transfer agreement between two devices. There are three different messages that can be sent:
  • SDTR (Synchronous Data Transfer Request)
  • WDTR (Wide Data Transfer Request)
define Ultra/160 SCSI. Double-edge clocking denotes the 160 in the name and represents a doubling of Ultra2 SCSI See Ultra SCSI.  data transfer rates to 160 MB/second. The other two features, cyclical redundancy checking and domain validation, are enhancements to the manageability of the SCSI signal.

Double-edge clocking doubles data transfer speeds without additional clocking, which ultimately reduces any implementation risks. CRC offers higher levels of data reliability by ensuring complete integrity of transferred data. Domain validation intelligently tests the SCSI network before completing data transfer rate negotiations. Ultra/160 SCSI is easy to implement due to complete backward compatibility See backward compatible.

(jargon) backward compatibility - Able to share data or commands with older versions of itself, or sometimes other older systems, particularly systems it intends to supplant.
. Ultra/160 SCSI also uses standard Ultra2 LVD See LVDS.

LVD - Low Voltage Differential
cabling and termination, making it a natural SCSI transition choice.

Adaptec

Adaptec, a leading provider of host-based connectivity, has also been actively involved in the development of Ultra/160 at the host level.

"We're actively working with ANDATACO and Quantum to ensure that our Ultra/160 SCSI host adapters The controlling electronics for SCSI contained on a printed circuit board that plugs into the computer's motherboard. A SCSI host adapter is often called a "SCSI controller." See SCSI.  function well with ANDATACO's storage enclosures," said Cameron Brett, senior product manager for Adaptec's Ultra/160 line of products. "Ultra/160 promises to be an exciting technology that will begin to see strong adoption this year. In part, this is because all of the vendors involved in Ultra/160's development are serious about providing solutions with real-world user benefits that are also backward compatible Refers to hardware or software that is compatible with earlier versions of the product. Also called "downward compatible." Contrast with forward compatible.
