AND THE WINNERS ARE ... WOMEN OVER 40.

Byline: Evan Henerson Staff Writer

Clutching her newly bestowed Golden Globe backstage, Anjelica Huston Anjelica Huston (born July 8, 1951) is an Academy Award- and Golden Globe Award-winning American actress and former fashion model. Huston won an Oscar for her performance in 1985's Prizzi's Honor.  - age 53 - was asked what wisdom women past the age of 40 possess that younger women have yet to learn.

``Wouldn't you just like to know,'' quipped Huston, who won her award for playing an activist in HBO's ``Iron Jawed jawed

Well, actually we would. So would the heads of several TV networks who watched the insanely popular 40-something leading players of ``Desperate Housewives'' flaunt flaunt

their popularity as well as their hot outfits. And, oh yeah, both Marc Cherry's series and star Teri Hatcher Teri Lynn Hatcher (born December 8, 1964) is an Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe Award-winning American actress and author. She gained attention for her role as Lois Lane in the television series co-starring with Dean Cain. , 40, won major awards.

As more than a few fashion watchers have already remarked, the ``Desperate'' quintet (whose ranks include a 29-year-old interloper, Eva Longoria) were dressed to attract: from the low-cut back of Hatcher's Donna Karan Donna Karan is the fashion designer and the creator of the DKNY (Donna Karan New York) clothing label. She was born Donna Ivy Faske on October 9, 1948 in Forest Hills, New York.  silver gown to the spaghetti straps of 41-year-old Nicollette Sheridan's Valentino. A couple of those outfits can even be purchased, since Hatcher and Marcia Cross Marcia Anne Cross (born March 25, 1962 in Marlborough, Massachusetts) is an Emmy and Golden Globe Award-nominated American actress, best known for her lead role as Bree Van De Kamp Hodge on the hit TV show Desperate Housewives. , 42, planned to donate their gowns for an auction benefiting tsunami relief.

Style appropriateness and sense was in fact the order of the evening among what trend watcher Tom Julian is labeling the ``youthful generation.''

``They were all very red-carpet-right and individually styled and not all looking like wannabe Barbie dolls,'' says Julian, the style voice of the Web site Oscars.com, claiming the ``Desperate Housewives'' actresses led the way.

``They're ageless, they come from different walks of life and all have a different sense of style. I think they all accept what their physical attributes are, and they use them accordingly.''

The over-40 fanfare didn't end with Wisteria Lane Wisteria Lane is a fictional street, appearing in the American television series Desperate Housewives. Premise within the show

Other winners included Glenn Close (age 57) for playing Eleanor of Aquitaine Eleanor of Aquitaine (ăkwĭtān`, ăk`wĭtān), 1122?–1204, queen consort first of Louis VII of France and then of Henry II of England.  in Showtime's ``The Lion in Winter,'' Mariska Hargitay Mariska[1] Magdolina Hargitay (born January 23, 1964) is a Golden Globe- and Emmy Award- winning American actress known for her role as Det. Unusual? Not particularly, says Leonard Maltin, film historian and critic for ``Entertainment Tonight.''

``Even in the universe that Hollywood would like to create, not everyone is 22 years old,'' says Maltin, ``and though they aim much of their product at a youthful demographic, the truth is they need an even broader audience to support movies and TV 52 weeks a year.''

``When you think of great female talent, there's got to be someone other than 19-year-old Keira Knightley on the horizon,'' Maltin continues. ``She's good, but she's a kid. Now and then you need a mature woman in the part.''

There are plenty. Virginia Madsen, 41, and Laura Linney, 40, are likely Oscar nominees for a pair of roles in films (``Sideways'' and ``Kinsey,'' respectively) where their characters are frankly and openly sexual.

Natasha Richardson, 41, is about to play Blanche DuBois in ``A Streetcar Named Desire A Streetcar Named Desire may refer to:
  • The 1947 play by Tennessee Williams produced by Irene Mayer Selznick, directed by Elia Kazan, and starring Marlon Brando and Jessica Tandy
,'' while her kid sister Joely, 40, was a Golden Globe nominee for ``Nip/Tuck.''

Meryl Streep, 55, and Julianne Moore, 44, routinely get their pick of choice roles, glamorous or otherwise. In 2004, Streep took on the king-making Angela Lansbury role in the remake of ``The Manchurian Candidate,'' and camped it up as an ultra-phobic relation in ``Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.''

If the saying holds true that ``40 is the new 30,'' it will be good news to the likes of Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman, both of whom turn 38 this year.

``I don't see a lack of interest in either one of them,'' says Maltin. ``A week without Nicole red-carpet photos is like a week without sunshine.''

Perhaps the choicest observation on the over-40 phenomenon came from Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger who, when asked about the spate of 40-something winners, deadpanned, ``You have to do a great performance. It's not enough to be old.''
