AND A FEW OTHER THINGS... IT'S THE WAY I SEE IT.Byline: rob DAVES DAVES Desorption and Vapor Extraction System IT always makes good copy for a newspaper when animals get stuck and need rescuing rather than humans. Yesterday we reported how a sheep was stranded on an island in Llyn Elsi Llyn Elsi is a lake located above the village of Betws-y-coed in the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales. It is a reservoir providing water for the village. There is a path round the lake, and at a height of over 700 ft it affords good views to the north-west towards the near Betws y Coed and needed a helping hand. This makes a good read because it's so unusual - despite the fact there are 10 times more sheep in Wales Wales, Welsh Cymru, western peninsula and political division (principality) of Great Britain (1991 pop. 2,798,200), 8,016 sq mi (20,761 sq km), west of England; politically united with England since 1536. The capital is Cardiff. than people. Yet when the rescue chopper hauls us two-legged folk off a mountain we tend to feel sheepish. We ought just to feel very human. ISN'T it odd how stories on a particular theme go in and out of fashion? Like the unfortunate way Anglesey keeps getting missed off maps by cartographers Cartography is the study of map making and cartographers are map makers. Before 1400
It's the fourth time lately this has occurred. I suppose it's better than the dog-bites-child stuff from a while back. Of course, this couldn't happen on Anglesey as it doesn't exist. Aaagh, Havens above, now I'm infected! I must be using a Weetatwit map. TWO senior firefighters were suspended, we reported last week, for failing to attend a blaze at Wylfa nuclear power station. The story behind the story is that as a result, their Holyhead crew would not attend either, because they had no-one senior enough to lead them. Ok, I think I understand. So if my house catches fire and a crew is on hand with hoses and water but no-one senior enough in charge, they let it burn down? Sorry but my respect for our fire service has just gone up - in smoke. WHAT the EU doesn't flag up as they push the UK into using low-energy lightbulbs is the fact they contain small amounts of mercury. At the weekend, one of our low energy bulbs got broken, releasing the toxin as a result. Thank you, Brussels! Another little known fact, as I discovered, is that flies get caught between the loops and frazzle fraz·zle Informal v. fraz·zled, fraz·zling, fraz·zles v.tr. 1. To wear away along the edges; fray. 2. To exhaust physically or emotionally. v.intr. 1. to death. I guess that makes bluebottles about as keen on the EU as I am. IMADE myself a promise not to be mean about the EU this week, for fear I will acquire a reputation for being something of a sceptic. I know, I'll make it one of my New Year's resolutions along with the usual pledges not to eat or drink so much. But allow me to gently mock after yet more praise for the EU on our Letters page for keeping the peace in Europe. So without Brussels, Britain and the Hun would be at it again? Yeah right. Hey, watch out for feisty non-members Norway and Switzerland. Duck, the cuckoo clocks are raining down! |
