ANALYSTS HEAR OF $440 MILLION IN NEW WIRELESS CABLE FUNDS

NEW YORK, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Some $440 million in new financing is being committed to the wireless cable industry during a 14-month period through March 1994, experts told financial analysts today at a conference titled "Wireless Cable in the Multimedia Marketplace."
Emanuel Gerard, chairman and director of research at Gerard Klauer Mattison & Co., Inc., was one of those providing the calculation of new equity and debt financing at an invitation-only conference that attracted 200 attendees. Public companies in wireless cable now have a market value of more than $500 million, said Gerard. His company handled the industry's first three initial public offerings and co- sponsored the all-day meeting.
In other discussions, two bankers predicted that the wireless cable industry would prosper during the advent of competing subscription television service by telephone companies and by District Broadcast Satellite (DBS). Wireless cable, with 500,000 U.S. subscribers and 2 million worldwide, uses microwave transmissions to provide entertainment and news programming.
"All of us are pretty excited about this industry," said Errol R. Antzis, vice president for media finance at Banque Paribus, New York. "Because of its efficiencies wireless cable has a tremendous advantage, both in the capital needed to start the system and in operating costs."
These strengths will serve wireless cable well even as telephone companies enter the cable television business, said Bank of Montreal Director of Communications and Media Thomas P. Waters. He predicted that U.S. wireless cable operators that are now "up and running" would achieve a 10 percent market share in five years.
Other sponsors of the conference were the Wireless Cable Association International, Inc., Bear Stearns & Co., Inc., and Oppenheimer & Co., Inc.
