GenesisIntermedia operates Centerlinq Internet Internet

Publicly accessible computer network connecting many smaller networks from around the world. It grew out of a U.S. Defense Department program called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), established in 1969 with connections between computers at the
kiosks, a free-standing machine linked to the World Wide Web. It features touch-screen Net surfing surfing, sport of gliding toward the shore on a breaking wave. Surfers originally used long, cumbersome wooden boards but now ride lightweight synthetic boards that allow a greater degree of maneuverability.  to patrons of a dozen malls across the nation.

What it offers the malls is information.

Much like a grocery store shopper's club, Centerlinq generates a card shoppers can use to receive discounts from mall merchants. In order to obtain a card, the customer fills out a form at the kiosk kiosk

, contributing to a database of shopper information used to target advertising.

The increasing popularity of the devices is readily evident at the company's Van Nuys headquarters.

Computers in boxes are packed into an area that takes up a quarter of the fourth floor, multicolored wires hang from the ceiling waiting to be plugged into the growing network, and employees from other departments have a standing order to stay out of the way.

GenesisIntermedia began as a direct marketing company but has entered into the technology realm with Centerlinq.

In a time when some malls are forbidding their tenants to promote the Internet as a sales medium, others are embracing it as a marketing tool. That's where Centerlinq comes in.

It is GenesisIntermedia's direct-marketing savvy, gained through years of pitching investment strategies to individual investors, that gives the company its strength in its new market niche, said stock analyst Courtney Smith, a principal of Courtney Smith & Co., whose comments spurred the price runup.

``It gives them expertise most dot-coms don't have in terms of marketing,'' he said. ``The Internet is the same as direct mail. It's one-on-one marketing, it's not brand marketing.''

``It should have been there a long time ago,'' said Ramy El-Batrawi, GenesisIntermedia.com's chairman and chief executive officer. ``People are finally recognizing what we have.''

El-Batrawi said companies comparable to Genesis have market capitalizations Market Capitalization

El-Batrawi said the company has plans to install kiosks in an additional 80 to 100 malls this year. He hopes to reach 100 million users by the end of the year, 1 percent of whom will sign up for the membership cards.

``Every mall has about a million people that traffic their mall. We know their shopping habits, where they shop,'' El-Batrawi said. ``We're in high-traffic areas, so we don't have to spend too much money attracting people to us.''

At some point the kiosks will be in enough malls and have enough users to make the product a viable alternative for major advertisers, Smith said.
