ANALYSIS: PLAYOFFS GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

LANCASTER - Pardon Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

berths, and if Southern Section championships are more important than league titles - as they should be - then only two things are at stake: a guaranteed home seed in the first round of the playoffs and a trophy.

Does anyone really care who wins the league title? Before the game, perhaps. But after? Probably not. By then, it's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. For the record, Antelope Valley is going for its second Golden League title in a row. Palmdale last won in 1997. The winner on Friday probably plays host to a third-place team when the playoffs start on Nov. 16; the loser (jargon) loser - An unexpectedly bad situation, program, programmer, or person. Someone who habitually loses. (Even winners can lose occasionally). Someone who knows not and knows not that he knows not.  probably will play a second-place team.

A year ago, the Golden League was a combined 1-3 in the playoffs, with only Antelope Valley making it past the first round. No Golden League team has won a title since 1994, when Antelope Valley won in Division II. Antelope Valley returned to the final a year later, but since then, it's been five years without a Golden League team even reaching a championship game.

Looking ahead, there is plenty of talent in the division. Foothill League power Hart (8-0), led by UCLA-bound quarterback Matt Moore, has won its last six games by at least three touchdowns. Quarterback Hudson Gossard of Crescenta Valley (9-0) of the Pacific League has thrown for a state-best 2,769 yards and 25 touchdowns. Mission League front-runner Notre Dame (8-0) hasn't allowed more than one touchdown in a game the past six weeks. And running back/linebacker Michael Owko, a junior at Mira Costa (8-0) of the Bay League, might be the best two-way standout in the division.

The real drama Friday involves Highland (3-5, 1-3) and Quartz Hill (2-7, 2-2), which meet at Highland. If Highland wins (and Littlerock beats Lancaster), there's a three-way tie for third place in the Golden League between the Bulldogs, Quartz Hill and Littlerock (1-7, 1-3); if so, they'll flip a coin Monday morning to determine which team goes to the playoffs. If Quartz Hill beats Highland, Quartz Hill goes to the playoffs and Highland and Littlerock are left out.
