ANADIGICS announced today that it recently received a patent for its on-chip single-polarity power supply technology for power amplifiers that enables designers of cellular telephones to take advantage of high performing GaAs MESFET See FET.  technology in a single-chip power-amplifier solution. The patent, (US5892400) entitled "Amplifier using a single polarity power supply and including depletion mode Refers to a transistor that is normally closed (on), allowing current to pass, but is triggered to open (off) and impede current. Contrast with "enhancement mode," wherein the transistor is normally open (off), but is triggered to close (on).  FET FET: see transistor.

ANADIGICS has implemented this technology into many of its power amplifier designs since its development in 1996. The high-resistivity GaAs substrate provides a way to simplify the DC-to-DC converter function as compared to typical silicon implementations. The new power amplifier design combines a switched-capacitor DC-to-DC converter with a level-shifting gate bias circuit that acts as a voltage regulator An electronic circuit used to maintain a level amount of voltage in an electrical line. It eliminates power surges, spikes and brownouts, which can cause harm to sensitive electronics. A voltage regulator "module" (VRM) is a voltage regulator in a replaceable unit. See surge suppression and UPS. . A current mirror regulates the negative supply, allowing constant output under challenging conditions such as high mismatch and/or temperature. By combining high-performance on-chip capacitors with low-current MESFET switches, ANADIGICS designers could also realize a low standby current for the circuit.

"This technology provides designers with the outstanding performance associated with GaAs MESFET technology combined with the convenience and cost-effectiveness of a reduced component count," explains Bayruns. "By including an on-chip negative voltage supply for gate bias, this technology eliminated the need for an external DC-to-DC converter IC."

Note: US Patent No. 5892400 does not cover ANADIGICS Microwave DC-to-DC converter, recently reported by the Trade Press. ANADIGICS Microwave DC-to-DC converter is patent pending.
