ANADIGICS, Inc. (Nasdaq: ANAD) has once again successfully teamed with industry-leader Ericsson in its development of the new Ericsson I 888, a GSM world phone that works on 1900MHz GSM in the Americas and 900MHz GSM in Europe and most of the world. A custom-designed dual-band power amplifier from ANADIGICS supports Ericsson's phone with a single-package design that increases functionality while reducing board space, manufacturing and design time, and cost.

The dual-band power amplifier was designed by a team of engineers at ANADIGICS who focused on achieving a high level of integration and functionality in one small package. "This is a unique part," observes Joe DeMoura, Wireless Product Development Manager at ANADIGICS, "because its architecture takes advantage of two separate amplifier designs that are now realized in one design."

In the past, dual-band phone designs required a power amplifier for each band supported. A single-chip dual-band solution simplifies the circuitry required and saves board space. In fact, the Ericsson I 888 World Phone weighs only 6.3 ounces, is 5.2 inches long, 1.9 inches wide, and is less than 1 inch thick. "Because this dual-band power amplifier is manufactured using ANADIGICS GaAs MESFET technology, the excellent efficiency and high performance of the power amplifier enables longer talk time in addition to its space saving benefits," remarks Barak Maoz, Wireless Director at ANADIGICS.

Efficiency and convenience are two hallmarks of Ericsson's I 888 World Phone, which is designed for global travelers. In addition to sending and receiving phone calls, users can check email, send and receive faxes, browse the Internet, and log on to corporate networks using the built-in infrared modem. The phone offers menus in 24 different languages and features caller identification, call forwarding, and conference calling with up to six people.
