AN INVITING NEW LIGHT IN MALIBU.Byline: Larry Lipson Restaurant Critic I'VE ALWAYS LIKED the layout of the former Gray Whale, Monroe's and Splash building overlooking the beach in Malibu. There's the incredible ocean view during the daylight hours and memorable sunsets at dusk from the upstairs dining rooms reached by elevator. And now, the neat beach-level bar has been furnished with some of the same lay-back couches as those at its neighboring sibling restaurant, Moonshadows. But in its newest incarnation as the appropriately named The Sunset, it seems to even exceed its previous attractive characteristics. New owners Franco Simplicio and Rodolfo Costella, following up their recent Moonshadows success, appear to be able to revitalize aging surfside surf·side adj. It's the service and expertise of on-site operating partner Vito Roberto and his maitre d' Mario Mariani (transferred from Costella's Ca' del Sole in North Hollywood) along with an exciting kitchen headed by ex-Cafe Del Rey Del Rey may refer to:

A Thai-style green curry broth, for instance, elevates a dozen chubby Santa Barbara black mussels ($9.50) to near-stardom. The kitchen really shines when, for example, it braises meaty short ribs ($17) with a rich pinot noir mixture, mashes Okinawan potatoes, adds a slice or two of red beet and caramelizes baby vegetables, resulting in a heady purple-hued dish of deep flavors and soft-to-crunchy textures. But I think the best entree dish here is the least expensive. It consists of juicy, rare, lean, Kobe ground beef ($15) topped with melted blue cheese, asparagus and a portobello por·to·bel·lo or por·ta·bel·la or por·to·bel·la n. pl. por·to·bel·los or por·ta·bel·las A mature, very large cremini mushroom.
