AMWAY SET TO BREAK GROUND FOR CATALOG WAREHOUSE

ADA, Mich., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- With approval secured from Ada Township for a tax abatement, Amway Corp. today announced to employees plans to break ground in March for a catalog distribution center on its Spaulding Avenue site.
The $40 million project is scheduled for completion in September 1994. The 630,000-square-foot building is being constructed to house the expanding warehousing and distribution of brand-name products sold through Amway catalogs. The operation will employ about 400 people.
The warehouse is being built on Amway's property on the southwest corner of Spaulding Avenue and Fulton Street to meet the space requirements for the corporation's growing catalog business. In addition to selling 400 Amway brand-name products manufactured at its world headquarters in Ada and other locations, the company sells some 5,000 brand-name products through the Amway PERSONAL SHOPPERS Catalog and other specialty catalogs.
"Amway is excited about beginning a major construction project that will retain and create quality jobs for people in West Michigan. We greatly appreciate the work of Ada elected officials and residents who supported our project throughout the long approval process," said Dave VanAndel, vice president - Manufacturing and Operations.
"Amway will honor that support by continuing to be a good neighbor and employer," he said.
"We're pleased that Amway's booming catalog business can continue to grow in West Michigan," said Amway President Dick DeVos. "Ada's always been our home, and we look forward to continued success here. Amway is fortunate to be headquartered in a community where government, business and residents step forward to support economic growth. The overwhelming support for this project demonstrates that leaders in our area understand the importance of helping business prosper in Michigan."
"As I said in my state-of-the-state address on Tuesday, our strategy places a priority on keeping our job providers who are already here. We want to help them grow stronger so they can create more jobs in Michigan. This Amway decision is a perfect example of the commitment that we're looking for from our job providers. I commend them on choosing Michigan for this project," said Gov. John Engler.
Amway's catalog warehouse and distribution operations currently are located at the company's world headquarters in Ada. Those catalog operations and nearly 300 employees will be transferred to the new building upon completion, and about 100 additional catalog employees will be hired within two years of completion. Last November, Amway completed a 185,000-square-foot catalog distribution center in Nevada to serve West Coast states. All catalog orders are received and processed at Amway's Ada headquarters.
In order to begin construction, Amway must receive a height variance from the Ada Township Zoning Board of Appeals to allow for a 46-foot- high portion of the building that exceeds the light-industrial zone's 35-foot height restriction. Amway also needs site-plan approval from the Ada Township Planning Commission and issuance, by the Michigan State Tax Commission, of the Public Act 198 tax abatement approved by a unanimous vote of the Ada Township Board on Jan. 11.
In addition to approval of the tax abatement, Amway also received approval of its request to the Ada Township Board last February to rezone the property from residential to light-industrial use. The rezoning was upheld by a 2-1 margin of voters in a public referendum last May.
