AMTRAK TO CONTINUE OPERATION OF 'GULF BREEZE' TRAIN

WASHINGTON, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Amtrak will continue the operation of its Birmingham-Mobile train, the "Gulf Breeze," with today's signing of a formal agreement by Alabama officials which provides for the state's continued financial participation in operating the train. This will allow the rail passenger corporation to continue service along the route without interruption.
The "Gulf Breeze," which began in October 1989, has been operating under an agreement between Amtrak and the state in which the two parties share the annual expenses of its operation. Since Oct. 1, Amtrak has been operating the train in expectation of the state's continued financial participation.
Today's action by Alabama officials provides the necessary assurance to Amtrak that the state will pay its portion of the train's long-term avoidable loss, estimated to be $1.05 million for the first 10 months of fiscal year 1993.
"Amtrak is pleased that state officials have decided to continue funding the Gulf Breeze,'" said Tim Gillespie, Amtrak's assistant vice president for government and public affairs. "The state's action today provides adequate assurance that payments that are now due will be made," Gillespie added.
