AMQUEST Announces New Low-Cost Rockwell Intl. Based 33.6 KBPS Modems.

LANCASTER, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 23, 1996--AMQUEST Corp., a PC enhancement company, Thursday announced a series of Internet Ready modems based on the new 33.6 International Standard (ITU (International Telecommunication Union, Geneva, Switzerland, www.itu.ch) A telecommunications standards body that is under the auspices of the United Nations. Comprising more than 185 member countries, the ITU sets standards for global telecom networks.  V.34 annex an·nex

In addition, any AMQUEST modem customer may contact the company for an upgrade to the new standard.

The new 33.6 standard provides for a higher transmission speed of 33,600 bits/sec over ordinary phone lines - a 16% improvement over existing 28.8 modems and a 133% improvement over 14.4 modems. In addition, future AMQUEST 33.6 HyperModem(TM) versions will provide up to a theoretical 268,800 maximum throughput rate Throughput rate is an obsolete term[1] in the terminology of automated chemical analysis. • Output rate

"We have been working with our partner Rockwell International Corporation to provide our customers with the finest products at the lowest prices," said Robert A. Norman, president of AMQUEST. "At AMQUEST we believe that the 33.6 product and our HyperModem technologies are the best and perhaps the lowest cost products available today for accessing the Internet and on-line services.

"Also, thanks to Rockwell's well thought out product plans we have been able to migrate essentially the basic board design from our 14.4 product to our high performance 33.6 HyperModem without any significant issues," added Norman.

All previously shipped AMQUEST HyperModems and 28.8 products are upgradable via a replacement EPROM EPROM

at a nominal charge from AMQUEST. The EPROM replacement can be done by novice computer user in less than five minutes. AMQUEST uses an OTP/ROM (One Time Programmed/Read Only Memory) instead of FlashROM memory since the faster capabilities of the HyperModem require a faster OTP/ROM than is available in the FlashROM components today.

AMQUEST anticipates moving to a FlashROM as soon as these parts can handle the HyperModem's faster speed requirements.

AMQUEST currently manufactures the following products which are directly upgradable to 33.6 Kbps: AM2814I-V I-V Current/Voltage 34, AM2814E, AM2814IV(Voice), AM2814I-Hyper, AM2814E-Hyper, and AM2814IV-Hyper(Voice).

33.6 Speed With Voice and Fax-on-Demand Options

With advanced voice mail support, the new 33.6 Kbps voice modem (AM3314IV) can create any number of private mailboxes on the users voice mail system, each with its own custom greeting and special password to retrieve messages. When users are on the road, they can set up their PC to automatically answer and record calls, receive faxes and make data connections.

Callers can access fax documents (price lists, sales flyers, etc.) from any touch-tone telephone with the modem's fax-on-demand system.

Pricing and Availability

All 33.6 Kbps Internet Ready modems will be available this month through AMQUEST's network of authorized distributors, value-added resellers A value-added reseller (VAR) is a company that adds some feature(s) to an existing product(s), then resells it (usually to end-users) as an integrated product or complete "turn-key" solution. , retailers and mail-order companies. The AM3314I-V34(internal) and AM3314IV(internal voice) will have estimated street prices of $129 and $159 respectively.

Both of these 33.6 Kbps models support V.34/V.Fast Class 28.8 data transmission and lower speed standards as well as 14.4 Group 3 Send/Receive fax. AMQUEST expects the 33.6 Kbps HyperModems (with 8:1 compression) to be available next month with details and pricing to follow. -0-
