AMPUTEE DOG, PAL NEED HOME; OWNERS OF CANINE SHOT BY POLICE HAD TO GIVE UP HOUSE.

Byline: Patrick McGreevy Daily News Staff Writer

Two months after losing a leg when shot by police officers searching for bank robbers, Rondik, the hard-luck dog, is in danger of being left homeless.

The owners of the German shepherd German shepherd, breed of large, muscular working dog perfected in Germany at the turn of the 20th cent. It stands about 25 in. (64 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 60 to 85 lb (27.2–38.5 kg).  mix have had to give up their Van Nuys house for an apartment where dogs are not allowed, and have been unable to find anyone to take in Rondik and his Dalmatian Dalmatian (dălmā`shən), breed of hardy, strong-bodied nonsporting dog probably developed in the Austrian province of Dalmatia (now Croatia) several hundred years ago. It stands from 19 to 23 in. (48.3–58.  companion, Mushka.

The Avetikyans already have moved into an apartment but were allowed by real estate agents Cindy and Michael Libonati to keep the dogs in their old house until it is reoccupied. However, it appears the house will be needed soon, and a new home has not yet been found for the dogs, who the owners want to keep together.

``These dogs have been traumatized, and they can't be separated from each other,'' Cindy Libonati said. ``The owners say they won't last apart.''

Brandon said the dogs are about 7 years old and very attached to one another.

``When Rondik was in the hospital, the Dalmatian was very sad all the time,'' she said. ``The dog cried the whole time.''

Rondik was shot twice Sept. 16 by SWAT officers who were searching back yards for suspects in an attempted robbery of a Great Western Bank branch in Van Nuys. Officers said the dog attacked them.

Rondik had one leg amputated after the incident and is in good health.

Anyone interested in adopting the two dogs can call Brandon at (818) 785-5935.
