AMP MT-RJ System To Be Displayed at N+I In Transition Networks' New Media Converter.HARRISBURG, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 1998--Transition Networks will demonstrate its Fast Ethernet 100Base-TX to 100Base-FX Media Converter, which uses the MT-RJ MT-RJ Mechanical Transfer - Registered Jack system from AMP Incorporated at NetWorld+Interop 98, Las Vegas, May 4-8. The new media converter allows systems managers to cost-effectively integrate unshielded twisted pair See twisted pair. (hardware) unshielded twisted pair - (UTP) Normal telephone wire (in the USA). It may be used for computer to computer communications, e.g. using a version of Ethernet or localtalk. It is much cheaper than standard "full-spec" Ethernet cable. and fiber optics fiber optics, transmission of digitized messages or information by light pulses along hair-thin glass fibers. Each fiber is surrounded by a cladding having a high index of refractance so that the light is internally reflected and travels the length of the fiber in Fast Ethernet networks. "Because conversion technology is our only business, we're able to provide our customers with early access to the broadest range of new technology," stated Cheri Podzimek, director of marketing for Transition Networks. "The high density of the MT-RJ design will help our customers cost-effectively convert to fiber where their networks require it." With one media converter, a switch with a copper port can be connected to a switch with a fiber interface. When used in pairs, the media converter provides communications across distances up to 2,000 meters over multimode fiber. The MT-RJ interconnection system from AMP includes transceivers, cable assemblies, connectors and related accessories to address the LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. equipment manufacturers and premise cabling markets. The MT-RJ system provides the same port densities and ergonomic advantages of the familiar RJ-45 connector. "Fiber components, such as those in the MT-RJ system, offer the same compact dimensions and interconnectivity as copper components," said Clarel Thevenot, director of product marketing for the global optoelectronics division of AMP. "It embraces advanced technology and reduced packaging as an overall design theory, considering all components from the hub transceiver, through the cabling system patch panels and outlets, to the card transceiver at the workstation." Transition Networks plans to support the MT-RJ from AMP across its line of fiber-enabling conversion technology. The product line includes twisted pair to single-mode or multimode fiber for Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, ATM, FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. and Token Ring networks. It also includes a full range of single-mode and multimode converters. Transition Networks designs and markets media, rate and transport conversion technologies across a broad spectrum of networking protocols including Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, FDDI, ATM, Gigabit and Token Ring. Based in Minneapolis, Transition Networks distributes these hardware-based connectivity solutions through a network of resellers in 50 countries. Transition Networks is ISO (1) See ISO speed.
