AMP MT-RJ System To Be Demonstrated at N+I In New Gigabit Ethernet Switch from XLNT.

HARRISBURG, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 1998--XLNT will demonstrate its Millennium 4000(tm) Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  switch, featuring MT-RJ MT-RJ Mechanical Transfer - Registered Jack  technology from AMP Incorporated, at NetWorld+Interop 98, Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States. , May 4-8.

XLNT's Millennium family of Gigabit Ethernet switches integrate wire-speed switching into a flexible, fault-tolerant architecture robust enough for mission- critical backbones. It is the only switch on the market today that offers a migration path from FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers.  to Gigabit Ethernet.

The Millennium 4000 is a scalable switch featuring a media-independent, five-slot chassis that supports switched 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet An earlier name for 100Mbps Ethernet. See 100Base-T.

, 1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet and FDDI connectivity with a 32 Gbps backplane.

"AMP's MT-RJ allowed XLNT XLNT Excellent  to build a product with the highest port density in the industry," said Roger Moyers, vice president, product development for XLNT. "The ability to put a duplex fiber connector into such a small package will fuel the growth in installed fiber. XLNT is on the forefront in utilizing this technology, and AMP has been one of the key vendors we are working with in this area."

The MT-RJ interconnection system from AMP includes transceivers, cable assemblies, connectors and related accessories to address the LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  equipment manufacturers and premise cabling markets. The MT-RJ system provides the same port densities and ergonomic advantages of the familiar RJ-45 connector.

"Fiber components, such as those in the MT-RJ system, offer the same compact dimensions and interconnectivity as copper components," said Clarel Thevenot, director of product marketing for the global optoelectronics division of AMP. "It embraces advanced technology and reduced packaging as an overall design theory, considering all components from the hub transceiver, through the cabling system patch panels A group of sockets used to connect incoming and outgoing lines in communications and electronic systems. Patch panels allow for manually wiring the connections with small cables (patch cords), rather than automatic switching.  and outlets, to the card transceiver at the workstation."

XLNT is dedicated to making networks faster and more robust than ever before. XLNT values its commitment to protecting customers' investments while delivering the hottest technology around.

Their line of Gigabit Ethernet switching products honor this commitment by offering the only solution for high-density FDDI, 10/100 and 1000 Mbps in one box. The company is headquartered in San Diego, Calif., with offices worldwide and remains privately held.

AMP, the world's leading supplier of connectors and interconnection systems, is also a leading provider of fiber optic products. Serving customers globally in a range of markets from consumer goods consumer goods
