AMOCO OIL COMPANY ANNOUNCES ENVIRONMENT IMPROVEMENTS
ST. LOUIS, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Amoco Oil Company announced

today that it is equipping 115 service stations in the city of St. Louis and in St. Louis, St. Charles, Franklin, and Jefferson counties with user-friendly vapor recovery nozzles.
"The Amoco V-1 system combines the environmental benefits of a vapor recovery nozzle with the easy operation of conventional nozzles," said Charles S. Woodbeck, Amoco Oil Company St. Louis district manager.
The company's proprietary vapor recovery system is virtually the same size and shape as a conventional nozzle. It is replacing the "elephant trunk" vapor recovery nozzles. Both return gasoline vapors from a vehicle's fill pipe to the service station storage tank, preventing the vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. The State of Missouri required such vapor recovery at St. Louis-area service stations as of Jan. 1, 1988.
Beginning in 1988, Amoco installed the V-1 system at 15 of its area service stations as a test of consumer response. Customer survey at these locations have indicated positive motorist reaction, according to Woodbeck. As a result, Amoco has decided to install the V-1 system throughout the area.
"The driving force behind this decision is our 'Customer First' philosophy," said Woodbeck. "We want to make using our service stations as easy as possible, and the new system makes gasoline purchases much easier and more convenient for the customer."
The project is expected to be completed by April 1.
The new nozzles can be adapted to the majority of existing gasoline dispensers. However, a few Amoco service stations have dispensers that cannot be modified to the V-1 system, and will continue to use the existing vapor recovery nozzles.
Amoco Oil Company is the refining, marketing, and transportation unit of Amoco Corporation (NYSE: AN).
