AMMI Announces 16 KBYTE, Microcontroller Smart Card.

SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 26, 1998--American Microdevice Manufacturing Inc. (AMMI Ammi (ăm`ī), in the Bible, figurative name of Israel after reconciliation with God. See Loammi. ) has unveiled a new multi application microcontroller based Smart Card with 16 KBYTE One thousand bytes. See kilo.  of EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM) A rewritable memory chip that holds its content without power. Although EEPROMs spawned flash memory, EEPROMs are byte addressable at the write level, whereas flash chips must erase a block of bytes before rewriting. .

The new Smart Card features AMMI's proven AMOS Amos (ā`məs), prophetic book of the Bible. The majority of its oracles are chronologically earlier than those of the Bible's other prophetic books. His activity is dated c.760 B.C.  Smart Card Operating System operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
. AMOS, written in high-level language A machine-independent programming language, such as FORTRAN, COBOL, BASIC, Pascal and C/C++. It lets the programmer concentrate on the logic of the problem to be solved rather than the intricacies of the machine architecture such as is required with low-level assembly languages.  (C) facilitates the new Smart Card to be easily and quickly tailored to meet the highest standards of Internet security.

AMMI's latest innovation is the field-upgradeable Operating System extension, which makes the new Smart Card universal and open to system advances. Using this new feature, enabled by AMMI's FLASH microcontroller technology, the service provider no longer has to replace Smart Cards when adding a new feature or upgrading the system security. Upgrades to the Smart Card can be done immediately and unnoticeable to the consumer, even over the Internet.

Friedrich Plankensteiner, director of Marketing and Sales for AMMI, said, "After expanding our product line to tackle the GSM market, this latest extension gives AMMI a leading position in the Internet security market."

A further expansion of AMMI's product offering will include a ultra low cost secure microcontroller Smart Card and will be announced soon.

Distribution

The new 16 KBYTE EEPROM microcontroller Smart Card is available now and is sold directly through AMMI to value-added resellers and system integrators.
