AMI Semiconductor Introduces High Performance CMOS Imaging IC with VGA Resolution for Intelligent Camera Applications.

POCATELLO, Idaho Pocatello (IPA: [po kə tɛ lo]) is the county seat and largest city of Bannock CountyGR6  -- Robust, Integrated Device with Wide Operating Temperature Range is Ideal for Automotive, Industrial and Security Applications

AMI Semiconductor AMI Semiconductor is a company engaged the design and manufacture of customer specific integrated circuit solutions, including solutions for the automotive, medical and industrial markets. Among its products are products that integrate processing of analog and digital signals.  (Nasdaq:AMIS A·mis   , Kingsley 1922-1995.

British writer best known for his novels, including Lucky Jim (1954) and Jake's Thing (1978).
), a designer and manufacturer of state-of-the-art integrated mixed-signal and structured digital products for the automotive, medical and industrial markets, today introduced a high performance CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes.  imaging IC for intelligent camera applications. The high performance AMIS-70700 optoelectronic device -- realized in AMI Semiconductor's automotive qualified technology -- has been developed in partnership with CMOS image sensor A CMOS-based chip that records the intensities of light as variable charges similar to a CCD chip. Although initially used in less expensive digital cameras, the quality of CMOS sensors has improved steadily.

and camera specialist Photonfocus AG. The new device will simplify the design and implementation of high quality digital camera applications in automotive, industrial, security and surveillance systems.

The AMIS-70700 can be used at temperatures ranging from -40 degrees C to 105 degrees C. High pixel resolution pixel resolution Telemedicine The sharpness of a computerized image, based on pixel concentration, which determines display resolution  of 750 x 400 is combined with an RS232 image output speed up to 60 full frames per second. The IC combines low fixed pattern noise with a very high signal-to-noise ratio The ratio of the power or volume (amplitude) of a signal to the amount of unwanted interference (the noise) that has mixed in with it. Measured in decibels, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR or S/N) measures the clarity of the signal in a circuit or a wired or wireless transmission channel.  (SNR See signal-to-noise ratio.

) and uses built-in compensation techniques to minimize high temperature leakage. Use of the Photonfocus LinLog(TM) technology contributes to the IC's high dynamic range and ensures acquisition of high contrast images without image lag or smear, even at high frame rates. In addition, the LinLog 'global shutter' capability allows fast moving scenes to be captured without motion artifacts artifacts

.

The high performance, wide operating temperature range and high SNR capabilities of the new IC make it well suited for new and emerging 'real-time' intelligent camera applications. In the automotive sector these include driver assistance systems such as rear view park assist and blind spot detection, and obstacle detection and avoidance systems, where the need for accurate edge and pattern identification demands clarity and high speed operation in all driving conditions. In the industrial and security environments the AMIS-70700 meets requirements for high quality digital cameras capable of operating in low light or the infrared spectrum Noun 1. infrared spectrum - the spectrum of infrared radiation
infrared, infrared frequency - the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum; electromagnetic wave frequencies below the visible range; "they could sense radiation in the infrared"
, and in high temperature applications such as welding process monitoring.

A key element in the AMIS IC implementation has been the use of the Photonfocus LinLog technology. LinLog overcomes the drawbacks of pure logarithmic logarithmic

image sensors by using a linear response at low illumination levels and logarithmic compression at high intensities. Transition between the two is optimized to prevent artifacts and discontinuities. The use of linear response at low light levels increases the signal swing at the output of the pixel to maximize sensitivity. In addition it reduces the effects of fixed pattern offset and gain noise associated with logarithmic sensors.

"From must-have automotive comfort and safety systems to industrial and security products, intelligent digital cameras are becoming a key element of new and emerging applications," said Bob Klosterboer, senior vice president of mixed-signal products for AMI Semiconductor. "The AMIS-70700 IC provides an integrated and cost-effective solution that delivers the high levels of functionality and performance that these applications demand, while lowering component count and simplifying circuit design."

Available now in production quantities, the AMIS-70700 (also known as the EMPHIS-300 by Photonfocus) is supplied as bumped and un-bumped probed wafer. A ceramic CLCC (Ceramic Leadless Chip Carrier) A square, ceramic chip package that uses metal pads for contact and comes in both socket mount and surface mount varieties. See chip package.  52-pin package option suitable for use in harsh environments is also available. Pricing is $52 in sampling quantities.

An evaluation kit can be offered to assist engineers in evaluating and implementing the new IC in their intelligent camera applications.

Photonfocus will act as AMI Semiconductor's distribution partner for industrial applications based on the new device, in addition to providing technical application support to AMIS automotive customers.
