AMGEN APPRECIATES AREA TEACHERS' WORK.

Byline: Enrique Rivero Daily News Staff Writer

Citing a desire to show educators that their work is appreciated, Amgen Inc. awarded $10,000 prizes to five local teachers for their exceptional contributions to education.

Recipients of the sixth annual Amgen Award For Teacher Excellence are Debra Bereki, who teaches integrated science and geology at Fillmore High School Coordinates:

Kanegai, who in the past has been recognized for his teaching by other groups and organizations, said he was honored to be singled out.

``We have so many teachers at our school who are deserving, too,'' Kanegai said. ``I just feel it's a reflection and a thank-you for my philosophy of teaching.''

The awards are intended to foster quality education at local schools and let educators know how much their work is appreciated, Amgen spokeswoman Lynne Connell said.

Also, biotechnology firms such as Amgen - one of the area's biggest employers - rely on a highly-educated work force, making quality education particularly important.

``We've got 3,000 employees that work here in Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964.
